Meniere's disease is a balance disorder of the inner ear. The symptoms of Meniere's are variable; not all sufferers experience the same symptoms. However, "classic Meniere's" is considered to comprise the following four symptoms: Periodic episodes of rotary vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a sensation of fullness or pressure in one or both ears.

Acyclovir

Has anyone used Acyclovir for Meniere's?. I've read some recent information that some believe MD to be caused by the Herpes virus and this medication has helped. I'm still seeing the NUCC and do get some help from that but it's never enough to stop the vertigo for long. Of course these rainy days aren't helping matters either!

I have read that too, but I thought that was at the early stages that it was helpful?? Not sure. No I haven't tried it but am curious as well if it has helped anyone.

I've had Menieres for a year and a half and developed shingles a couple months ago. They gave me Acyclovir for the shingles and I had significant improvement of my MD symptoms while I was on it. I got my life back for a couple weeks! When I went off of it, the MD symptoms returned. Thats when I started researching the connection between the two diseases and found there is some evidence that they are linked. The problem is that most doctors won't prescribe it for Menieres because it would be an "off label use". Which, of course is more than frustrating, given that it works!

In my research, I found Dr. Richard Gacek's(University of Massachusettes Memorial Hosp) name on another support site and reached out to him for more info. He has done extensive research on the subject and has had several papers published about it.

I'm now in the process of finding a doctor who will prescribe Acyclovir because I want my life back.
