My dad was going deaf at a young age learned to lipread just from acquiring the skill to do so, I do not think there is a taught method to this. There is hand sign language that is taught and often people combine both methods.

I've started reading sign language books because being I'm almost deaf in my left ear I just want to be prepared. When I was in college I kept having a nagging at me to take sign language but the class was full I guess my inner intution knew what I may be going through. If Im in a place where there is a lot of noise I kinda have to read there lips because I can't hear them otherwise. I have had ear problems since I was a child and about a year ago before I was diagnosed with menieres I had mastoiditis I also had a scan that showed my air cells were absent on my left side of the mastoid process. In my research with menieres this seems to play a big part in developing it. So I guess some of us were doomed from the start. Sorry to get off topic just wanted to explain what lead me up to learning to read lips and wanting to learn to sign.

I need to start taking time to learn to sign also, I will more than likely be totally deaf in the near future. I listen to music everyday. I know there is surgery (cochlear implant) but I am sure it will not be the same.
