Pain after Dental Procedure

I recently had my first dental visit since I got sick. I had a cleaning and a filling and for the first time ever, my teeth are sensitive to hot and cold. My tooth is still painful from the filling and it has been two months. I called my dentist and he said I need either a root canal or extraction and he won't do either of them because my mouth is too small, and I probably need to be put under for it. We'll as enticing as that sounds, I'd rather skip it if at all possible. Has anyone had any issues with pain following dental procedures? I am hoping maybe it is just inflamed due to MCTD and not in need of further work.

Probably not much to do with the MCTD. You might need to have your bite adjusted. The dentist can have you bite down on a paper that will mark where the pressure is on your teeth. If undo pressure is on the tooth that was filled, due to the filling being too high, he can grind it down to the others.
I have had that happen in the past.
BTW- I had a filling and cleaning yesterday also! LOL!

Oh, get some sesitive teeth toothpaste. Sensodyne works well.

I think medications can cause this. I would def discuss it with your dentist and your rheumy so they can be aware and advise you properly on what you can do to prevent it or at least make it better.

did they use an amalgam filling or the newer ones that are white?

I had an amalgam replace with the othe and have had issues with sensitivity ever since. the sensodyne helps.

It's a white filling. I am using sensodyne but still having pain.

I agree the filing might be too high. Go back to dentist have it re checked. If after that it still hurts then maybe you do need a root canal.

Oh my...I HATE going to the dentist...I am such a wimp when I go that a tear or two always slides down my check. Kinda pathetic huh, but the fear is overwhelming - LOL - There may be a support group on here for just that :)

Anyway, I was just thinking that some people with MCTD have the dry eye and dry mouth due to the Sjorgen's that can be prestent - when the mouth is dry, it does lead to tooth decay and issues so I am wondering if , for some people, sensitivity can happen because of that? Just a thought :)

Tammib, I worked for a dentist and also an oral surgeon. Based on your post its clear you need a new dentist. I don't care how much you like him move on.

I agree its probably a bite adjustment issue but he should have had you come in its a quick and easy fix. Also easy to test if tooth is diseased or dead, x-ray, pulp test or a round of antibiotics. Occasionally the hypodermic/numbing can irritate a nerve that's another possibility.

Regardless you need a better dentist.
