silly question

My son seems to be pretty honest about his drug use to his friends on line. He knows I monitor it now but I think he may have forgotten or just doesn't care anymore. With that being said, he told one of his friends a few months back, on line, that he wanted to stop doing drugs but can't. He also said if he had the choice between having a girl or doing drugs....drugs would win hands down. He's 16 and always been a ladies man. Anyway, he's scheduled to go to residential rehab soon and I saw on- line recently that he thinks this "treatment" is going to be a waste of time because he really can control it and he doesn't have a problem. Now he's telling his friends this -- not his parents or drug counselor or any "authority" figure. So....is it possible that he is NOT addicted? I can't believe I am asking this considering he was assessed and it was recommended that he go in residential.

His main drug is pot but he's used all kinds of different drugs including coke. Lately, however, I don't think he is using as much as he had, if at all. Is it possible that he is just in denial to himself and can't even face the fact to his friends or himself anymore?

It's possible he's in denial especially being faced with the fact that he is forced to go to treatment, however you just mentioned that he knows you monitor his conversations (and being a teenager myself would definitely not appreciate). Maye he is stating this to his friends in order to communicate the message to you, so you will have doubts about sending him to rehab and possibly reconsider the whole option. It is quite a smart tactic actually.

Of course, who would like their conversations monitored? As a parent of a teen who is doing risky behaviors that could kill him or harm others, it is my responsibility to know what they are. Truthfully, I think he's forgotten that I do, anyway. Whether he's addicted or not, he is abusing (his personality and behaviors indicate that) he does need help. I suppose I just answered my own question anyway.

Denial is a big part of addiction. AlAnon would be really good for you I think.

My son is 15 and smokes pot a lot. He does not work, and I am not sure where he gets the money, but he sure seems to be stoned more often than not. He is really honest with me about what he does, and I don't know if that is good or bad.
At what point does a parent seek outside help? Some say it is a phase and will pass, others don't know what to say. All I know is that I see my son going down the wrong road and I don't know what to do.

Help.
