Marijuana Addiction & Recovery Support Group
This community is dedicated to those looking to overcome their addiction to marijuana, a drug produced from parts of the cannabis plant. Join the group to find support among people who are also looking to cease their habit of smoking marijuana, share your experience, and get advice. It's not easy to kick the habit, but together we can.
After 30 years of smoking it, it is also hard to quit which is why there are support groups like this one. For people who want to quit.
If there are people who quit or want to quit, that is up to them. Just like it is up to you if you want to smoke it.
i've been a daily user for almost 10 years now and have been telling myself to quit for a while now, but THIS topic is a huge reason i struggle to make the choice:
- is this really so bad? studies don't show serious health risks and people never die directly from an overdose
- i can continue to outperform my peers at work. i'm super smart & super reliable despite my addiction (sorry to pat myself on the back...)
FULLMETALHEART!
forget what other people are telling you (like your mom) because choosing to stop smoking *can really only come from you*
for YEARS i refused to believe i had an addiction, that my compulsive desire to smoke was fueled primarily by my love of being high and not because i was dependent on it (ha, is there a distinction between the two?)
i know TONS of hyper-productive, super-successful, and over-achieving potheads in NYC. we fancied ourselves productive addicts, ones that do not burden society by being high 24/7. we wore the addiction like a badge of honor for many years...
but as the years went on, the feeling changed... maybe i changed. while i was still relatively productive, i couldn't ignore the feeling that i was not running at full capacity. even if i earned an A- on my report, my brain was only running at 75%. what was i leaving on the table?
for me, i knew my addiction was out of control when i HAD to smoke and could only think about my next joint (is that so different than nicotine addiction?), i was way less social than before (or am i getting older?), and i hate how it made me smell & look (but who cares?)....
i also realized i had an addiction when i found a smart excuse for EVERY reason to quit.
forget about the haters, they will always be there. just be sure you CONTINUALLY reflect on your life, strive to be ever self-aware, and be brutally honest about how you feel. don't be afraid to admit smoking isn't fun... hell it could STILL be fun but also cause you anxiety.
TL;DR VERSION
recognizing & admitting addiction is the first step, and can be the most difficult...
I like your post. I'd love to respond with my own experience, point for point...but at this point, I have to goooooo for the day!
Peace to you,
We all change over time due to life experiences and the simple fact that our tastes and beliefs change with age, but if you think that herb is at the core of the issue then by all means, give quitting a shot. If you have trouble quitting then addiction is the issue and you should seek out help.
I have quit a few times (for months or years) without a problem, even though each time I quit I did it unwillingly. And during those periods of abstinence I saw no improvement or decline in my life that I could have honestly attributed to the lack of herb.
I could go all day, but to answer your question in one statement. Weed is bad when the user feels harmed by it and out of control in It's use.
This forum is about addiction support, and addiction isn't nice, no matter what it is.
I know for me - am not speaking for other people - daily weed smoking from the moment I woke up until the moment I went to sleep, for 26 years, affected me to the core of my being. I didn't turn into a violent a-hole, but I did adopt a whole ton of behaviors and priorities which negatively impacted my relationship to the world. I was a changed person.
