Good advice from Forgotmath and Julie GH!!!
Do you have and Lymes Literate Medical Doctor (LLMD)? Regular MD's are not up on the latest research and can make recommendations that are not the best for your condition.
I was referred to this doc by my primary. He is an internist but has infectious disease specialty and according to her he's 'really into' Lyme disease. He said he would usually go with Doxycycline but didn't first because of the photosensitivity. I'm very fair skinned and live in Baltimore, gets lot of sun..
My plan was to complete the 28 days of amoxicillin then try a different abx if (when) symptoms persist.
Any more advice much appreciated!
"Antibiotic-associated (C. difficile) colitis is an infection of the colon caused by C. difficile that occurs primarily among individuals who have been using antibiotics. It is the most common infection acquired by patients while they are in the hospital. More than three million C. difficile infections occur in hospitals in the US each year. After a stay of only two days in a hospital, 10% of patients will develop infection with C. difficile. C. difficile also may be acquired outside of hospitals in the community. It is estimated that 20,000 infections with C. difficile occur in the community each year in the U.S."
1.) Get a really good COMBO probiotic... not just acidophollus... that's just one in the spectrum
2.) WAIT 3 hours AFTER you take your abx before you take the proB (because the abx kills bacteria, so it will render your proB useless if you take it too close to the abx)... I take mine 2x a day b/c I take my abx 2x a day.
3.) Eat a proB yogurt a few times a day
4.) Avoid Sugar, Alcohol, foods with yeast. That means you'll need a yogurt w/out added sugar... sweeten with Stevia and a handfull of blueberries, for example.
It is possible that your body just doesn't agree with amoxy... there are lots of choices, but all require attention to the probiotics, and avoiding those foods .... yeast loves these foods and yeast overgrowth is not fun. My LLMD has me on a maintenance of nystatin too, which has helped a lot. Even my Naturopath Dr thinks nystatin is a great support.
Good luck... you'll figure it out and get into a groove with it all! Let your LLMD know what is going on... you shouldn't have to wait for your next appt to do that... call them... it's your right to have your questions answered. Different LLMDs have different policies on this, so find out if you'll be charged to call inbetween visits... most do NOT do that, but some unfortunately do.
