Sulfa Drugs Contraindicated?

I've been taking Celebrex for years but I recently read that it is contraindicated for SLE. Does anyone know if this is true? I have yet to be told the do's and don'ts for treating my lupus. I'd appreciate some advice.

My husband (great at researching)said that Sulfa drugs supposedly cannot be tolerated by about 30% of individuals with Lupus...it's known to cause flares. Hope that helps a little...good luck!

That's what I found also. Instead of running antibody tests on me the Rheumy gave me Sulfa drugs and now I think the Lupus is affecting my brain.

I'm sorry to hear that! You would think that Rheumys would know better. My Rheumy tried to prescribe me a sulfa based drug and we made her change it, just in case I'm part of the 30%!

I have been on celebrex for years as well , I don't believe it is a sulfa drug . I was taking vioxx and was told this drug was bad for lupus but that celebrex is okay .

It is true though that sulfa drugs should not be taken if you have Lupus . My rheumy told me it makes it worse .

Celebrex is a NonSteroidal Anti-Inflammatory it is not a sulfa drug.There is some conser about people taking it having heart trouble but you MD would have thought of that before giving it to you.
I have been allergic to Sulfa drugs all my life so I do not know if they affect lupus.You can ask your pharmasist they would know or at least know where to find out.
I have heart issues and my MD put me on Celebrex for pain so what ever it can cause can't be to bad or he would not have let me take it......Deb

I had a heart ultrasound yesterday and I get my results next week so if there isn't a problem that should solve the celebrex causing heart problems question . I have been taking 400mg per day for about 5 years .
