You might ask them "when did you get your medical degree?" Or "I didn't realize you had a medical degree, what is the number to your office so I can book an appt?"

Oh I wish I would have though of those great comments the day that very rude man accused me loudly in front of all Walmart customers -- "lady your not handicapped -- you don't deserve to park in that spot". Oh if he could only walk in my shoes for 5 minutes! Just making it into the store is hard enough and then to have any energy at all left to shop??? What a total jerk! I just turned around and went home and cried. Felt so defeated. But now -- several years later, I'm tough and ready to fight back. I love the comments you have all come up with. Thanks!

Do these people have such sad, pathetic lives they have to question the minutiae of yours? I have to say, my answers to such puerile questions would be unprintable! I can't say I can recall anyone asking me these kind of questions, or making such comments...at least not first hand. Those closest to me say it's because I always look as if I would probably rip someone's head off if they did. Can't say I agree, I am a very peace loving human being...but a fairly private person...I would not dream of being so rude and making these kind of comments, to people, so I don't expect that kind of behaviour from others. Good luck in your quest for suitable replies....

I'll never forget when a few years back one of my closest friends was diagnosed with scleroderma. We were having dinner with another friend and she was talking about the illness. Get ready - her comment was, and I quote, "If I JUST had lupus I could deal with it!" I had no comment - I was furious but I kept it to myself. I wanted to say, "Oh yeah, try doing dialysis three times a week and still feel like you're dying, try dealing with the pain, fatique, hospitalizations.. okay, you get it. I know sceloderma is a serious disease, but lupus aint a walk in the park either!

Nobody can know what lupus is unless you live it. But to be insensitive and downright rude about it is inexcusable. I wouldn't worry about hurting someone's feelings - the rule is when someone is rude they don't need your discretion. Give it right back to them in no uncertain terms. How dare they say those things. Unreal!

Sometimes those statements aren't even worth dignifying with a response. They're said out of ignorance as well as insensitivity. Sometimes, as hard as it may be, ignoring such statements is the best thing to do.

But if I had to throw out a one-liner, it would be this: "Would you like to walk one mile my shoes? If so, I would be more than happy to let you do so then you come back me and ask me that question again." Oops...sorry, that was a two-liner-LOL!
