Loneliness Support Group
Loneliness is an emotional state in which a person experiences a powerful feeling of emptiness and isolation. Loneliness is more than the feeling of wanting company or wanting to do something with another person. Loneliness is a feeling of being cut off, disconnected and alienated from other people. The lonely person may find it difficult or even impossible to have any...
This group has been showing sings of life recently, so I'm going to add to the mix. Today was the Great Snowstorm of 2026 for much of the South, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast. I made sure to suit up and take a walk in the snow, during which I ran into some friends who invited me to their place this evening. Despite the things I did today, and the family and handful of friends I have, I still felt lonely and a bit sad and depressed. I have struggled with lonely feelings since college, along with a low-grade depression and anxiety. The lonely feelings used to be very intense but, ever so gradually, they have become less intense. I have no idea how I survived the very intense feelings back then. Nonetheless, the feelings are still there to some extent and they impact my mood and my ability, or lack thereof, to feel pleasure. My dog died last year, so I am living by myself again. I used to always take him outside in the snow. He was designed for winter weather. I really missed him today. I used to talk to him when I felt lonely. I hope to adopt a dog again soon.
These feelings of loneliness come and go. I tend to feel better during the work week and more lonely during weekends, unless I am with other people. Days like today, when everyone's cooped up and it's treacherous outside, I tend to feel lonely and sad. I have a number of people (family and friends) I can call if I'm feeling lonely, although I don't always communicate how I'm feeling unless I am really comfortable doing so with that person. I haven't been on a date in a looong time, not to mention a relationship. This is an issue that I am working on; it has its roots in some trauma. I hope I'm able to overcome the issues that have held me back all these years.
What's your loneliness like? Are you in a relationship and still feel lonely? Are you lonely when you're with people? Does having a pet help you feel less lonely?

I am alone a lot because I live alone and not in relationship....last one was about a year long but maybe 2yrs ago....it ended with me pulling away to just be friends and we still are but it broke her heart.....I have two dogs...and they are ok companions for me....they have a doggie door for when I leave and go to part time work....usually just 4-5hrs at the jobs 3 days a week...but traveling time and stuff keeps it longer....
I had AA much of the last 30yrs as a social contact area but I pulled away at Covid...I have two other money programs but one is telephone mostly or zoom and the other is just zoom...I do have a sponsor in MN but I am in MO and in one program I have a local sponsor...I got rid of AA and my AA sponsor completely this fall....so less social stuff now....but I do have a couple friends and nice neighbors where I own my house.....
my depression comes when I am strapped for money....loneliness comes at odd times....it is not severe....I visit doctors all the time and consider them friends.....it probably is not how they see me....but with AA I have learned to be honest as much as I can up to 100% but not always....so sometimes things do not get told about my feelings or something....honest is the best thing I have ever known...not everyone is likely to be honest....and that is a shame but friends get and give honesty to me....so that is why they are friends...
I havdn't seen this much since the 80's and it's continuing
I'm in Toronto
Can I ask if you're seeing a psychiatrist and if your depression is being addressed?
Only answer if you're
comfortable
It's great that you pushed yourself and got out today
I think our pets are absolutely fabulous
Wonderful family members that have brought me joy
I adopted a little 8 year old Shih tsu from a rescue e years ago and she's my bff
I live in a 2 apt house and my landlord is who I hang out with
He's a great friend for over 30 years
I'm older and haven't been interested in relationships for a long time
I went through things post marriage that was hard to deal with
My first husband I left due to alcoholism
He couldn't stop
He was beaten to death
I had another marriage that wasn't meant to be for either of us ..No bad ending...and quite a while later it had nothing to do with us he committed sucide
These things take a toll
I'm pretty reclusive now...I seldom go out
I don't know if I'm really lonely
I do know I'm sort of checked out in some ways
I do have a few really great friends that I regularly talk to
A couple go back to elementry school
I don't know if I'm lonely
I don't know how to re engage with life either as I'm now in my comfort zone
Sending hugs...xo
I am in the NE and we are getting mounds of snow ; and more today . I have been married over 5 decades. I have been very lonely in my marriage . I did not face it until my accident about 15 years ago . It took away most of my quality of life . I am physically challenged with chronic pain , which has left me with depression. My friends have dwindled down to a precious few since my accident. My only sibling and his family do not keep in touch with me for a while . When I have sent messages to them , I am met by silence . They are in their own bubble and have a busy life. I had a daughter who was quite the challenge to raise . I loved being a mom . But decades ago , she alienated herself from the family . I have two grandchildren she never gave me the opportunity to love and get to know . I reach out to a few friends from time to time . I do not stand on ceremony, but there gets to a point where I feel that the phone or text works two ways. I used to be very social before my accident . I have 2 neighbors , but they stay to themselves. I hardly go out . I feel like I am just waiting to die . At my age and with what life has dealt me , I will welcome it . I feel I don’t want a quantity of life without a quality life. What a life’s lesson this has all taught me. I guess we are all on our own journey in life .
Jan, that was a beautiful share. Life does have a way of scarring us. My life has scarred me also. I now sort of believe I was naive to think life would always be happy.
I am not physically able to stay as busy and doing volunteer things as I would like. I am in-between purpose at this time. My grief for my friends who died last year comes and goes and this snowbound stuff reminds me they are gone physically.
With respect to scars and things taking a toll, I have had a good life, with some scrapes for sure when I was a teenager, yet I still struggle with loneliness and depression, which impacts my ability to feel pleasure and truly enjoy life. Of course, no one is immune. I am still young and mobile, so I am able to enjoy winter and being out in the snow. But, even for me, it has its limits. On the way home from work today, I caught myself thinking about being in Puerto Rico or some tropical place. The snow will melt, but this year it's going to take some time.
Rru there may not be a specific reason for the depression other then you suffer from the disorder of depression and that's reason enough
I'm bipolar 2 so I'm on the depressive side and I am in a 'higher' form of depression as well much of the time
Although I've gone through some things that as Hasty wrote have scarred me
I don't believe the depresdion is tied into my life other than having the
disorder of bipolar a lot of the time
Certainly you can feel very alone when seeing things from the point of depression
Gratitude has been my greatest tool
It's hard to feel as badly when you're feeling grateful
I hope that you have your new 4 legged friend beside you soon....xo
