Martyrdom is not subject to acceptance, and so not really pleasant to be around someone who behaves as a martyr.
As a human, we all have faults, have hurt and been hurt along the road of life...for myself, all I can do is to learn from my mistakes and try not to repeat.
I'm 70 and have done horrible things in my life to myself and to others...my hope is that as I move forward my spirit will project one of kindness towards myself and others.
I've never had a lot of friends, and now I've got no one to call and my phone only rings with spam. I am So Grateful however to have run into a wonderful woman nearly two years ago and I help her two days a week with cleaning and grocery shopping so she can remain in her home. This gives me purpose and meaning to my life. I have a cat that is 20+ that drives me crazy, quite frankly I think she has dementia due to her howling...she has been my companion for the last 16 years. I also have a son, single parent who has autism, 27 that drives me crazy, I am learning to detach and let him fall down after being a helicopter Mom for way too many years...very hard to do.
For me, guilt is a waste of time and energy, I can't change the past, yes I am pained by behaviors which were life changing, yet what is done is done...My hope is that Christ who I do believe died for my sins, I will be forgiven, and hope that changing my behaviors over the years to be a become a better and more accepting person of "humanness" forgive others, and do my best to help along the way is my atonement.
I think we/I/people tend to give compassion more freely than to ourselves.
With the abrasive people, well we attract what we see within us because it's 'known', and safe.
If you've not heard of Carolyn Myss, perhaps check out some of her videos on utube....how we view our life/world using the 7 floors....when we are on the ground floor we have little knowledge of the vast view from the 7th because we've never experienced/can not understand what we have not known.
One thing I found helped me to learn the lessons of forgiveness, despite being very hard on myself for many years was after I had my son. I better understood that I could not give to him everything I might have wanted, I could not give what I 'didn't know", this helped me to forgive my parents for what they didn't give to me....they were not taught, given, or never experienced ???, thus how could I fault them??
Forgiveness/Compassion were wonderful gifts to learn. <3
