I lost my family when I was very young but had loads of friends and worked till I retired 5 years ago. Even then, I had a couple of friends and volunteered 3 days a week at our local hospital,
Since then, one friend died, one friend went into some sort of depression and is in contact with no one, another friend and I had a falling out and our hospital closed. So now, I only volunteer one day a week at my temple and one day at a rehab center gift shop. For 5 days I am home doing nothing. I used to be a shopaholic but I dont need clothes now - no where to wear them.

My (very small) family isn't supportive and say that It's my shy, quiet personality and depression that drives people away. I'm then basically told to not come around because I drag people down with me in to a spiral of despair..thus forcing me to be isolated in my room.
I am jobless so I can't simply go out and enjoy myself in solidarity. Most of the time I'm made out to be ungrateful for what I have. I'm thankful I'm not homeless (I was throughout my teenage years), yet I don't see how any sensitive person can say such a thing if they've never walked in my shoes.
I have trained myself to respond to my empty voicemail each evening with a humorous response of some sort like, "Well, here I am Ms. Popular!"
Using humor and irony to overcome bad feelings is such a cliche, but it helps me very often.
On the really bad days, it does seem to help a little.
