I don't want to believe that, so I'm new here.
Hi. I'm a college teacher. Lived in a big Midwestern city for 30 years, but college budget cuts from the recession ofter the 2008 crash lost me my job. Luckily, I got another better one in only 4 months, but to take it I had to move from a city of 2 million to a city of only 20,000 some 1500 miles away. Which is why I'm here today.
I'm single, divorced 13 years ago with no kids and happy not to remarry. Truly. I've dated a lot and had 3 long term relationships in the last 13 years, but as much as I've enjoyed dating, my single status is my happiest. At work I have tons of friends to have lunch with and do things on the weekends and even week nights. During the year.
This is my 2nd year in my new job I love, and I noticed last year and as this school year ends that in the summer my colleague friends, appropriately, circle their family wagons and do stuff with their families. That leaves the rare single older person (I'm 54) who is not looking to date sidelined for a couple of months.
I'm not lonely during the year, but during the summer I am. I signed up to teach summer school to stay busy, but as happens a lot these days, the class enrollment didn't hit the 10 student minimum for it to be offered in the summer, so it was canceled.
I can only afford so many trips out of town to keep myself entertained, so I came here to see how folks are dealing with being alone and enjoying doing it this summer. Thanks for listening.

Hope the dog days of summer aren't getting you down!
I love visiting all of one type of place, for example lighthouses,caves/beaches, mountains, waterfalls, etc in my new state. If you've seen most everything nearby, you could probably try one of the adjoining states, since you moved such a long way, there has to be plenty to see.
Trying something new: canoeing, seg way, archery. If I were
adventurous, I would want to check out all the zip lines.

I also like to grow things. Just about every year, I grow flowers from seeds. In the summer, I grow marigolds and giant sunflowers. I collect the seeds after the flowers die, so I don't have to buy seeds often. And sometimes I give plants or seeds to friends. I'm also growing some veggies this year...mostly in the house. There are lots of youtube videos on growing window gardens. That's where I got the idea. It's less work to do it inside. And the 100 degree days here take the fun out of too much outside gardening for me. I'm doing it just for the simple joy of watching something grow. If I actually get something I can eat or a flower blooms, I consider that a huge bonus. Walmart has lots of packets of seeds that are only 20 cents. I've already harvested some red bell peppers, tomatoes and basil.
I also learned how to crochet from youtube. It's not just for the ladies anymore. It's fun :) Did you know you can use plastic shopping bags for yarn? It's called plarn. Plastic yarn. I'm making my 2nd purse out of it now.

have a $262 electric bill to pay next month, down from about $330 a month during winter, cause of 3 electric heaters on in winter. My summer utilties bill will maybe be $100 for the month. Next winter, to cut down on bill, gonna close my bedroom, fold up my kitchen table and chair, put carpet on kitchen linoleum, and put bed there. Not as though I get more than one visitor per month, maybe one day per month.
as somebody who could only afford a scary city slum apt, i'm glad i'm living in a town of about 5,500 people.
i cant emotionally handle being around homeless cats---but there's a no-kill cat shelter that needs volunteers; maybe you can volunteer at something like that during summer.
I never have a problem with this at all because I am so busy gardening. Its the best! Can't seem to get enough of it.
