More Compassionate?

Hi everyone, because I'm new to this community, I was wondering if there are other like-minded people out there. By this, I mean especially with the burden of loneliness, do you feel like being lonely and rejected has made you more compassionate and empathetic in your life? 


I certainly feel it has done so for myself. Unconditional love has been such a rare phenomenon in my life, that I feel even more inspired and compelled to give it to others, for I know what it feels like to be bereft of it. I'm convinced that not only loneliness has done this, but my myriad of the other "issues" I endure. This compassion has certainly caused me to find meaning through my suffering. Every struggle, every rejection, every relational blow, I now use as fuel to make me more devoted to healing the wounds of others and giving love to the unloved. I've always been drawn to "outcasts" or "damaged" individuals, but I think my own experiences might be part of the reason. Do you feel the same?

I have had similar feelings in my life. I am retired and found the best way to help others who a down is to volunteer at a hospital. The feeling of fulfillment you describe is part of the process indeed but, also be aware that you encounter situations that exceed your ability to be compassionate, Sometimes all you have is the feeling that you have helped someone but you go away feeling a little more depressed than when you started. This is a good way to carefully examine your depression.

I'm actually glad you posted something like this. For a long time, I've felt nothing but loneliness. In result, I 100% have gotten way more compassionate, empathetic, and more loving than before. No doubt was I empathetic previously, but I think, for me, the fact that I don't want anyone feeling like I do is what drives me to show more care, more love, and simply more compassion for others. I feel exactly the same way as you and I think it's awesome we use our bad experiences to do good for others. No, we don't deserve the bad that happens, but if we use it to our advantage in some way, it could be a life saver to someone out there.

More compassionate? Yes. And more suspicious. There are some real lulus around who prey on people's loneliness, to steal their money or use them for nefarious purposes.

I agree with you all. I too am lonely. My husband died two years ago suddenly of a heart attack and I have been heartbroken ever since. And my daughter is leaving home shortly. I am sympathetic more to who have lost love ones and/or strickened with illnesses. I so understand what you are feeling. Since growing older, I've noticed myself crying at times and wishing and thinking about how short our time is on this earth. I see others in a worse situation than myself and I think why? It is hard to hear sad news about anyone. I love people and try to see the best in everyone.

I've become very kind towards others but at the same time I can't trust them. I love at a distance. I love people, but they leave me so often I can't let myself get close.

    DS, I just have to say that if I did not love my friends here on DS I would be gone in a heart beat!  I am at my wits end of losing posts!  It seems like the Gateway thing seems to be a you problem.  How can we fix it?  I always make sure that I am online and signed in before I hit send.Welcoming any suggestions other than the ones that I recieved before.
