Loneliness Support Group
Loneliness is an emotional state in which a person experiences a powerful feeling of emptiness and isolation. Loneliness is more than the feeling of wanting company or wanting to do something with another person. Loneliness is a feeling of being cut off, disconnected and alienated from other people. Hi Everyone
I am new to this group and this site and already feel better that it's here and I am writing.
I basically just spent my 30th birthday alone - which was not all bad. But I get lonely very often and I think that it aids to my anxiety. I moved away from home when I was 17 years old to go off to college (far, far, away) to a place that I had never been before. I just needed to get out.
After that, I moved to Memphis, lived there for 6 years, and then relocated to New York. I went to both places alone and without family.
Now that I'm in my 5th year in New York, I am finding myself full of dreariness because I don't really have any friends or family here. I am a very outgoing guy, but things are just different here. It's a very lonely place - although there are over 8 million people. Things just move so fast that people don't stop to make time to make friends.
The only person that I really have is my sister, who is very far away. We speak on the phone, but its not the same as being able to stop by and say hello or get a hug. Most of my interactions are with strangers and I rarely see them again.
I don't really know how all of this sounds or if it's even understandable, but I do need a place to vent and I am grateful that this is here for me.
Thanks everyone

If you only know one thing about me, it should be _____________________.

Loneliness is a powerful thing. I could almost certainly make a lot more money in a different job but would almost certainly have to move. A few years back I was even invited to apply for this great job....in Chicago. Thanks but no thanks. I have a couple of really good friends here and it actually scares me to go somewhere where I don't know a soul.
You've probably already thought of this, but how about joining a local group related to whatever hobbies you are into? And there is always volunteer work. There's lots of ways to donate your time and in most of them, you'll meet people. Just a thought.
. . . in N.Y.
Welcome Rousseau. . :) . . Are there areas in Brooklyn where ppl some communityyand neighborhood exist?
D'ya know anyone in the Village? Ye~I know it is is pretty much changed, but one can guess there are occasional networks of ppl....
Are there rent parties that a person can somehow hear about?
Apartment swap was at least for awhile a business where ppl met ...um of course that was for finding a place nearer one's work. And shopping around I figure was an enjoyable thing, often. Meeting ppl.
Maybe there is is a church or human potential organization -- something stable ../w history. Hmm maybe an auxiliary group that helps a museum or library. Volunteer stage hands, promoters at rehersals. I knew Larry Cornfeld who when he was up and coming in off-off-Broadway. (Based in 3 Downtown spots, chief among them Judson Church on Washington Square.)
If you looked at what Cornfeld is doing and at what this church at 3d & Thompson is doing, um well U might see small events open to the public.... Judson is concerned w both social issues and the arts. Seems I recall an art gallery there, open to the public free.
When Pastor H. Moody was still alive, he was, in gay rights, known natiinally. Writing and meeting in mid-century, straight, he was a forefront person. So J. is a place where lots happens
and they can always use 'stage hands."
Or audience for _theater in the round_ ;
(I've known of parties, after).

It's great that you have one person who really cares about you, and with a sibling, usually you're kind of near in age, which hopefully means you will always have family.
Labels rarely help anything. Outgoing people may not be able to find like-minded people to be friends with, but it makes them alone, rather than turning them into a loner who avoids people.
Finding a hobby/activity that you really love, can be a great thing. I recently read that certain foods can have a powerful effect on anxiety. You can check Google or Pinterest - Brazil nuts - just a few a day, is one.
Sending good thoughts and wishes to you :)
