Loneliness Support Group
Loneliness is an emotional state in which a person experiences a powerful feeling of emptiness and isolation. Loneliness is more than the feeling of wanting company or wanting to do something with another person. Loneliness is a feeling of being cut off, disconnected and alienated from other people. I count my blessings in a similar type "it could be worse" way. When I was young, I would tell myself, "Oh well, I'm young. I have my whole life ahead of me." Now, sometimes all I have is, "Thank God,
I don't have a dog, waking me up at night, drooling all over my belongings and shredding things."
Your first sentence pretty much sums up my feelings about relationships this day and age.
I really do not like to be so cynical, but it is pretty hard not to be. There are plenty of times, usually Sunday evenings, when I am headed home from whatever I am doing and dread going into an empty house with no one happy to see me.
My ex wife first met way back when Yahoo had a free personal service. Back then, online dating was new and people rarely spoke about it. You logged on to find someone and as soon as you met face to face, typically both people logged off. That is no longer the case. People juggle as many people as they can handle and never delete their accounts, even after they have met someone and feel a bit of chemisty. I know I am generalizing here, but it feels as though as a culture we are moving away from long term monogamous relationships. That makes me feel very old and out of touch. I always thought of myself as someone who would grow old with someone, like my grandparents did. That seems less and less like a possibility.
You list all the negatives that you don't have to deal with, but leave out all the positives you don't get either. Kinda one sided isn't it?
You are right, there would be positives to having someone, Samantha named some of the most important. Personally, I do know of those positives are as widely available as they used to be. I'm not giving up, but I am re-thinking my expectactions.
Samantha,
My grandparents are still happily married. For the majority of his life my grandfather was a trucker, a million plus miles by the time he retired. I think the reasons they lasted as long as they have is because they missed each other and cherished the tme they could spend togeher, and when they talked on the phone, they actually had something to say. Sounds like you two are on the right track.
