Loneliness Support Group
Loneliness is an emotional state in which a person experiences a powerful feeling of emptiness and isolation. Loneliness is more than the feeling of wanting company or wanting to do something with another person. Loneliness is a feeling of being cut off, disconnected and alienated from other people. OK, so I'm also a member of the divorce and breakup group as my fiance just left me. There is a common theme in there that says in order to be emotionally healthy you need to learn to be happy all alone.
I balk at this insane idea! To spend the rest of my life alone is to spend the rest of my life in HELL! I have always felt the need for companionship, probably due to being completely ignored as a child. I understand I have some issued that need to be worked out, but I seriously don't see anything wrong with wanting companionship.
Human beings as a species are social creatures. We are meant to live in family groups, much like wolves or elephants. A lone elephant is a sad elephant, as is a wolf. So why are we expected to be happy with solitude? Because we have logical thinking brains? Does that really dispell the need for companionship? I think not.
Now, I understand there is a difference between the unhealthy "need" for companionship and a healthy want for companionship. I just don't want to grow old all by myself. Sure, I have kids, but I can't talk to them about my adult thoughts and feelings. And how about our adult physical needs? So yeah, I get lonely. A lot! If I'm not in a relationship I feel SOOOOO unbearbly alone. And I won't date just anyone, I'm kind of selective. Besides the fact that it is way too soon for me to even be thinking about dating again. Sheesh!
I have quite a few "friends", but I tend to keep people at arms length for fear of being hurt. Just about eveybody I've ever truly cared about has either stabbed me in the back or walked away. And I tend to not reach out to my loved ones because I feel selfish in doing so.
Yeah, I have issues. I know.
Ahhhh, I just need someone to talk to......

I don't think it is meant that you should grow old alone. Just learn to not have an unhealthy need for any companionship, where you expect the other person to complete you and where you don't have healthy boundaries in place or aren't getting your needs respected. Everyone needs companionship but its got to be healthy and based on mutual caring, goals and respect.

I agree that we need people....I am sure that we succeed better when we have surrounding people to keep on track to....responsibilities....

I invited Bill to have dinner with me last Sunday. He wasn't willing to drive 7 hours to mid Michigan and teased me with his beautiful ribs!!! So, of course I ate alone and had cedar salmonĀ
