Lactose Intolerance Support Group
Lactose intolerance is the condition in which lactase, an enzyme needed for proper metabolization of lactose (a constituent of milk and other dairy products), is not produced in adulthood. A hydrogen breath test is required for a clinical diagnosis. With lactose intolerance, the result of consuming lactose or a lactose-containing food is excess gas production and often...

Hi. I'm new to this group but have been lactose intolerant for over 10 years. What I wanted to tell you all though is that if you become lactose intolerant, it is highly likely that you are already gluten intolerant. It's the damage done to the gut by the gluten intolerance that causes the loss of the lactase enzymes. I didn't know that when I became lactose intolerant, so 10 years later after being very ill with chronic fatigue for 2 years I finally discovered that I am gluten intolerant. Blood tesst for gluten intolerance are not necessarily accurate either. I discovered my gluten intolerance for myself after going off gluten to see if it was causing my chronic fatigue. Sure enough, after 2 days gluten free, my chronic fatigue disappeared.

Thats very interesting...I also am Lactose intolerant, but have not always been that way.I was tested last year for celiac, but it came back negative.I do believe that I have a gluten intolerance though..if I stay away from gluten I feel much better.Im very tempted to buy Lactrase capsules..they are very expensive but my doctor says they have the enzyme needed to break down the dairy.Have you ever heard of these?Ive tried lactaid pills but they dont work.Im so sick of being sick!

I'm new too! I'm gluten free and it's helped me a lot, but not totally. I'm now eliminating lactose and feeling a lot better.

Interesting; I generally feel like I'm poisioning myself when I eat anyway so I wonder if that might be part of the problem. My mother had rather severe lactose intolerance (she couldn't even eat cheese or yogurt) for years. No one else in my family seems to have these symptoms, but interestingly, both my maternal grandmother and her sister died of pancreatic cancer in their 70s; I wonder if they may have had undiagnosed gluten intolerance or longstanding lactose intolerance, at least?? I know lactose intolerance is hereditary and my mom would have had to inherit it from someone, and those 2 people are the only other family members of hers I am aware of who had digestive issues...

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
