Kidney Stones Support Group
Kidney Stones are solid crystals of dissolved minerals in urine found inside the kidneys or ureters. They vary in size from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball. Kidney stones typically leave the body in the urine stream; if they grow relatively large before passing, obstruction of a ureter and distention with urine can cause severe pain most commonly...

Hello and thank you for allowing me to join this group :)
My primary referred me to a Urologist, even though my stone passed. I still have trace blood in my urine. I asked her why refer me to a Urologist vs. Nephrologist. She said it was up to me.
Since I am having frequent kidney stones, wondered if a Nephrologist would be better for me. I also suffer from gout, that runs in my family history.
I wondered if anyone here who experienced stones were referred to either one.
Thank you :)

I've been on high dose prednisone for pneumonia, and now I am slowly weaning. But lots of symptoms I don't like having, plus overeating has put at least 10 lbs on me. The food is "loud" as the GLP-1 users refer to it.Also pressured speech. Which comes out in my posts. Sorry I posted so much. I just need an outlet for my agitated and irritable brain. Just scroll on by my posts, if they are too...

Has anyone heard from Jenn, she had an adult son with aspergers, Eric, they lived a long time with her grandmother, then they moved into an apartment. She had a funny little picture if I recall of a short dark haird woman as part of her name in a red dress. There are so many people who have dropped away from this room...I wonder where they are, and miss them. Wishing that DS could become what it...

I see both for my kidney management. The difference for me is the nephrologist follows my kidney health every 3 months with blood work to determine it's functioning level. I see my Urologist once a year.
If you have long standing issues with kidney stones, perhaps a urologist and all around kidney function, who is more specialized in surgery, might be in order if you've not gotten satisfaction with a nephrologist.
Just wondering if you've been reffered to a dietitian to get a specific diet plan to promote good kidney health and avoid stones? I've had to be Very Proactive with my nephrologist...as with most dr's.
Take care :)
I have an appt at the end of December to see a urologist. I called a nephrologist and they said they would only see me if a urologist referred me. So, will stick with the urologist appt for now.
I have had 3 kidney stones pass over 30 days, and I thought migraine was bad.
My kidney function tests have all been normal.
July 2018 the CTScan showed obstructing 5 mm stone in right distal ureter with mild hydronephrosis of right kidney. Between October and now, I have had 3 stones, hopefully they passed. Had a CTScan done two weeks ago and it showed no stones but having whole trace blood showing up in my urine. Today, having right flank pain again, so not sure what is wrong. I wish I could get in sooner.
Nope, no one has talked to me about diet nor referring me to a dietitian. I'll email my primary about seeing a dietitian, thank you for the info *smiles*. So, you follow a strict diet? Oh my, I need my mood food, what will I do if I have to give up M&M's and anything chocolate, lol.
In 2018, when I was trying to pass that 5mm stone, the urologist wanted to place a stent in and I said, no way. So, I'm a little gun shy of going to a urologist. In 1994 I had to have one removed and OMG, the first week it felt like I was urinating razor blades due to stretching the ureter.
What is up with your kidneys?
Again, good to hear from you !! (( hugs ))

In 2012 I lost one kidney to cancer. I've got 4 cycts now that are being watched by nephrologist/urologist. ATM I've got 29% kidney function in my right kidney.
Definately! ask pcp and nephrologist for a referal to renal dietitian. One of the huge factors in my own kidney health is drinking water and keeping hydrated is the #1 best way to keep my kidney functioning. I am on a strict 40gram of protein per day, watching my sodium, phosphorus, and potassium intake to 1000mg per day...about 1/2 of a regular diet.
If you are getting kidney stones, your diet could be a reason....this is a web page of kidney stone diet. https://www.google.com/search?q=kidney+stone+diet&oq=kidney+stone+diet&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l7.3302j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
I've been doing a kidney blog on Davita a kidney support site.....if you have any "Davita Dialysis Centers' near you, they give a kidney class for free....http://forums.davita.com/forum/welcome-introductions/new-member-introduce-yourself-here.
Thinking your pcp could refer you to a nephrologist, ? perhaps you could get on a cancellation list? Just know that an apt does take a long time to get....getting an apt with my nephrologist can take a 2 month wait...so Dec. isn't too bad for a Urologist!
Lucky to have found you :)
Hoping you will have a Nice Thanksgiving, ml
Thank you mir0 for all your help and responding to this thread. I value your opinion.
I will certainly look into the renal dietitian. She gave me the names of several nephrologists so, will call them back to see if I can get in with this. Or, my primary has a dietician within her practice, I could start there as well.
Thank you for the links, I'll spend some time today to look into them.
Uric Acid runs in my family. My grandfather had serious gout and I get gout flares randomly. I am a meat eater and I understand that purines are not good for kidney issues. So, have been limiting my intake of red meat, but I do need the protein, not sure what to do about that, but a dietitian should be able to help with that.
I want to start with the Mediterranean/Dash diet as that is low in inflammatory food groups. Yesterday went to an organic grocery store and wow, are the prices high. I try to eat organic but with my restricted income, it's almost out of reach. So, reading up about this diet and will slowly incorporate it into my diet. Sugar is going to be the hardest one to give up.
My sodium has run high for years and I always ask what can I do about this, with no response by my doctors. I do shake salt into any of my food, but I know it's in processed food. Trying to slowly cut out as much processed food as I can now. Sugar and bread, I will miss.
I drink half my body weight in fluid ounces to help manage the abnormal fluid in my inner ear, but I seem to run dehydrated all the time despite my best attempts.
Hoping you enjoy your Thanksgiving Day tomorrow as well ((( hugs )))

Take Good Care Of You...hoping you'll find your way back to bp room...Happy Thanksgiving!! ml
BTW, just discovered that the building I live in added a soft water system to our water. Lately I have experienced burning mouth, dry tongue, dry skin, elevated blood pressure and more kidney stones. So, can you talk to me about this, as soft water treatments contain sodium or salt.
