I am just wondering if other people miss a lot of work due to kidney stones, and how you deal with it?
I just graduated university last summer and started a job in September. At the end of October I had to be taken to the emergency room at 2am because I was in sooooo much pain. It turned out that I had quite a few small stones that were creating a blockage in my right kidney. I had a surgery to get them removed (basket extraction) and had a stent put in. I took 3 days off of work for this, and then I went in after that. Well when I returned home from work that day I was in so much pain I start throwing up - so much that I couldn't even keep down water. I ended up missing 3 more days of work since I was so sick. Fast forward a few weeks I got a very high fever, vomiting, and was in a lot of pain. It turned out I had a kidney infection and I ended up missing a full week of work because I literally could barely get out of bed. Now this past week I had to have ANOTHER surgery to remove another stone that was blocking my kidney. I had to take even more days off now. My doctor told me my kidneys are like unusually inflammed. Because of that, moving around a lot makes me have a lot more pain, so I just can't go into work knowing that it will make me worse, because then that just prolongs getting better, which isn't good for me or the company.
My supervisor has been pretty understanding. She says she would prefer me take time and get better, then be at work sick, but I can tell that she is getting a little bit frustrated at me. Also I feel like my co-workers are really annoyed. I have missed pretty much a total of half a month of work, so at this point if they did fire me I would completely understand. I just want to know how everyone else deals with work?

My supervisor also seems very understanding, but in this day and age it's hard to be off work so much and not worry. I am lifting you up and hoping you are better soon. I missed so much because of the stent they put in...my body kept trying to reject it.
In my case, I live with chronic pain, and I have learned to live with it.
I work in a hospital and I see people getting narcotics for kidney stones.
My pain meds are not. Also I had 2 types of cancers and continue to work, it keeps my mind away from pain, at home I feel worse.
Coworkers resent people that are sick, and they are not understanding,and if one misses work,they feel they work double.
I also never tell how I feel for this reason.
I have had this problem for years.
If I were you, at least I could rest a bit easier knowing I didn't have to worry everyday about calling in "updates" or stressing over what co-workers were saying about my absence. Your health should come first, then your work. Feel better soon
I am not a wimp who quit because I was in a little bit of pain. I had a pulmonary embolism in 2010 after a surgery and didn't even miss a single day of school for that, so for me to quit a job I am in a great deal of pain. My stones have all been removed but for some reason my kidneys will just not stop swelling. The pain is in the kidney and then spreads up to my ribs, where the pain is severe. I have been prescribed different kinds of pain pills - none of which work at all, so I don't take anything.
