Irritable bowel syndrome is a common intestinal disorder that is characterized by bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, cramping, and constipation. Typically no abnormalities appear during standard medical testing, and so irritable bowel syndrome is identified by the symptoms. Although irritable bowel syndrome can cause serious discomfort, the intestines are not harmed.
You might be surprised to learn that many other young women have IBS - She isn't alone! I found this out when I moved into a sorority house and saw boxes of Immodium in other girls' rooms. I couldn't believe other people relied on those pills to get through the day. Could your daughter talk to Student Health or the counseling center at her college--maybe there is a support group on campus.
My pain is 24/7 and even though it for the most part is very disabling, I am in a better place than I was 10-15yrs ago. It is an emotional journey. Reach out to people like on this site. Only we can truly understand what life is like living with IBS. I wish you well.
