Interstitial Cystitis (IC) Support Group
Interstitial Cystitis (IC) is a urinary bladder disease of unknown cause characterised by pelvic and intense bladder pain, urinary frequency (as often as every 10 minutes), and pain with urination. It is not unusual for patients to experience nocturia and pain with sexual intercourse. IC is also known as painful bladder syndrome (PBS), particularly outside of the USA.

Hi everyone,
My doctor from the pain clinic is insisting that I broaden my diet and test new foods. Since I did the elimination diet, I have been so terrified to try new foods that my diet definitely lacks variety. It would help me a lot if you guys could please list the vegetables that you can eat without any problems. I understand that everyone is different, but I will be much more willing to test a vegetable if it is okay for someone else with IC. Please let me know. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!!!
Sincerely,
Kat xo

I can eat all vegetables except for onions and soy beans. Its really the fruit that you have to be careful about, basically I can only eat blueberries and pears. Have you tried the prelief when you do get a flare?

I can eat avocados, zucchini, carrots, broccoli, asparagus, green beans and spinach. Most any kind of potato is fine, too. I am careful to steam the vegetables and only use olive oil and a touch of salt and garlic powder. No fancy sauces or spices. As for fruit, pears and blueberries are my staple. Sometimes I can tolerate a little fresh watermelon and honeydew. If I plan on eating anything questionable, I take 2 Prelief beforehand. As you said, everyone is different. It's basically trial and error. I'm very stict on the IC diet. I am like the food police, because I'm so afraid of a flare-up.

I am also very strict about diet...Too scared of painful flares. However, I do eat ALL veggies, except eggplant and I eat only small amounts of asparagus and beets. But everything else is fine. I eat Pears, Blueberries and Fuji apples(in small amounts). One thing I'm really happy about is I have found that I can tolerate greek style yogurt(Fage brand only) I buy the plain kind and add maple syrup and frozen blueberries to it and maybe a little granola on top. Yum! Also, I find that if I don't eat large quantities of anything, they don't usually affect adversely.

I have had no issues so far with any of the vegetables I eat, I can't do onions, but I can use onion powder to help flavor things. As far as fruit I can only eat bananas, gala apples, and blueberries, I may try some pears though since Deanna mentioned them being ok for her. Best of luck to you!

I was down to 7 safe foods(before I had my breast implant out-put in for breast cancer) and I was eating white rice, millet, green beans, carrots, brocolli , sugarless yogurt and lean beef. For me the sugar content of the food as well as the acidity was a problem. Peas and corn have a higher sugar content. Hope this helps. Love and Prayers, isabelle1954

I am still experimenting but so far spinach, brussel sprouts, cabbage, carrots, lettuce and turnips have not caused flares. I can relate to your post because I am terrified too. This condition is a sure way to lose weight! Keep us posted please!

Hi Kat, I seem to have no problems with any vegetables, except for onions. It's too bad because I love them with other foods! I eat a lot of cooked and raw vegetables and never have a problem. Good luck! I hope that this helps you. Laura

Thank you everyone for your replies --- it definitely seems like most vegetables are okay for you guys so I am not as frightened to try things now. I think the first things I will embark on are spinach and carrots.... I'll let you know if they work out! Thanks again! xo
