Interstitial Cystitis (IC) is a urinary bladder disease of unknown cause characterised by pelvic and intense bladder pain, urinary frequency (as often as every 10 minutes), and pain with urination. It is not unusual for patients to experience nocturia and pain with sexual intercourse. IC is also known as painful bladder syndrome (PBS), particularly outside of the USA.

should I be asleep for cyscopy

I had UTI symptoms for a week(never had this befroe) and I took OTC Uricalm(just 1 pill) ; the symptoms left but I went in to see the doc and there was blood in my urine(micro). We have tested 2 times in 8 weeks and it is still there, so he wants me to have a cyscopy.

After researching on the web; I want to hear what some others have experienced. Should I choose to be asleep for the test? My Doc tried to give me an anti-depressant as treatment; I refused the med as it was in the tricyclic family and Amitripiline some years ago( perscribed for Firo) gave me hallucinations.

I'm unclear how he thought this med could clear up traces of blood in my urine; any thoughts? Thank you

Years ago amitryptaline (Elavil) was used with IC....but not really to clear it up or anything....more like tohelp with some of the pain. I wouldn't take it either. The answer as to whether, with your symptoms, you should be out fo a cystoscope, in my opinion is YES. I had all the tests done with no anesthesia, pain med, or anything, and would not do that again. Tell them you want anesthesia.

Thanks so much for your opinion Beckeroo. I told him I no longer had the symptoms and he said ,if you take this med for a month and it(the blood?) goes away; then you have IC; if not you will need a cystoscope.

When I found out(on the web) what the med was(my script reads"pamelor") I called his office and asked for something different. His nurse called back and said there isn't anything different and it's this or do the test.
I said set the test up. This was a GP.

I take it the GP isn't going to do the test correct? I had a whole bunch of those tests years ago and they were all excruciatingly painful so if you can have it under anesthesia do it.

I would have this done by a urologist if possible. From personal experience I just found GP's to be just that. A urologist is going to be much more knowledgeable at what's going on. I have had multiple cystoscopies done while awake. It's a 30 second procedure...no diff from a catheter. They do give you something to numb the area so that's it's not as painful. It definitely doesn't feel good but it isn't that bad that you need to be asleep.
