After having multiple surgeries for endometriosis, I was dx'd about 18 years ago, concluding with a total hysterectomy seeking relief from endo and PCOS. It took some time to get a cocktail of medications and a treatment plan that helped make life easier and no longer have to be looking for a restroom when out and about. When it was possible to find a physical therapist that did internal massage AND accepted my insurance, it brought me relief, and it is not just about Kegels! (I have had some success, but still has been hard to find a therapist + insurance=relief) 16 years ago, my urologist was implanted in a neurostimulator by Medtronics. It attaches to the Sacral nerve, and a small pocket is made on the gluteus maximus for the tiny battery. It can be programmed by the medical staff, giving you different settings depending on your pain, which you can select between the different levels and types of stimulus from the device, which almost like the remote con control for a TV or even to turn it off.
In terms of medication, each person is different, yet what has worked best for me is a combination of meds taken throughout the day, Levison(long time not in my medicine chest, insurance won't convert it.)sublingual oxybutynin dl, Atarax, and Elmiron. I understand the cost of medications, especially when we don't have insurance or are underinsured. About the lawsuits for Elmiron, my understanding is that it has been known to cause eye damage. I am in the process of getting approval for using by doing intermittent self-catheterization several times a week. I had several practice sessions with the NP at Urology. The great thing is that you don't need as many of the capsules, and I have had better relief. I am interested in getting feedback from others who are using it this way. The negative is that you need more things like catheters, syringes, lidocaine; the insurance has denied the Sodium bicarbonate, which mixes everything up.
