An example from my life: I live with my mum and stepdad, and I don't get along with him. Once my mum told me to be nice to him coz she'll be always nice to my future husband even if she doesnt like him. And here I am now dating a black guy and getting all the crap from my family (fair enough, not a husband, but a serious bf). So sometimes when I get really pissed off with my stepdad I start making comments about things he does or things related to him. and it could be something trivial, but I just express my anger and pain in that form.
So the point I'm trying to make is that considering ur parents' attitude towards ur bf, they might just critisise things that are related to him.
On the other hand, they might just genuinly express their opinion about plaiting ur daughter's hair since they don't know much about it
It's a very well known fact that pulling the hair tight will cause it to thin prematurely if you do it up that way a lot.
Maybe they were talking about this.
