The only think that's worked consistently for me lately has been time release melatonin. 5mg was too much for me so I would usually cut a pill into 4s and take 1/4. I got recently the 1mg version and it's awesome.
None of these make me feel refreshed after sleeping. I don't think it's possible for me. But, they do help me get a solid 8 hours which is what I need to function through the days.
If you have acute insomnia, OTC or Rx drugs can be useful as a temporary fix. But I would not suggest using anything artificial long term.
If you have chronic insomnia, I think it's better to focus on sleep habits, stress management, and so forth. Also treat underlying medical conditions that disrupt sleep. That can lead to long term sleep improvement, potentially without using drugs or supplements of any kind.
It can make it harder to wake up if I take too much of it though. Experimenting with it has led to me to find out that half of a 1mg pill is what works for my body.
