You can be tired from a 5 mile hike but be wide awake and far from ready to go to bed.
Drowsy is what you're looking for. At some point, you'll feel it, guaranteed. Just stay up until you do. Then head to bed.
But, and this is very important, keep a very consistent wake time 7 days a week. Do not allow yourself to sleep in and avoid napping regardless of how sleep deprived you may feel.
That is one of the core methods in CBT adult sleep training programs, and it works. That's what I used. Still use the methods today.
