Insomnia is a symptom, rather than a disease, and is characterized by inadequate quantity or quality of sleep. People with insomnia complain of difficulty falling or staying asleep, which results in significant impairment of daytime functioning. Insomnia is categorized as transient (shorter than one week), short-term (one to three weeks) or chronic (longer than three...
First, the stresses of moving and starting a new job, plus the shift changes to your circadian rhythm, are all combining right now for you. Stress can and will disrupt sleep, we know that. So this might be a good time to double down on whatever stress management methods you normally use (such as good, sweaty exercise, if you're not getting that already).
Second, you probably will benefit by starting a new daily routine with consistent wake times and bed times, and try to schedule at least an hour or so before bed to just unwind, relax, let go ... to help prepare yourself for sleep.
The white noise is excellent if it helps mask the disturbing noises that awaken you. Good idea.
Just curious ... have you been able to tie the timing of your insomnia -- meaning the awakenings -- to such things as diet choices of the previous day, or lack of exercise? Maybe some caffeine a little later in the day, things like that? By keeping an eye on such things, you might be able to make some adjustments in your lifestyle that will help you sleep better.
One good aspect of all this ... moving to a new place breaks the old insomnia associations you used to have with the old place. That can be a good thing. So this might be an excellent time to work your nondrug sleep improvement plan, whatever that is, and make a fresh new start.
Good luck.
Thanks very much for the advice, doubling down sounds great, I don't really have the ability to do sweaty exercise right now but I can certainly go for a brisk walk on a good day. Absolutely, a lot going on right now and when you throw financial problems into the mix, it becomes a train-wreck of sorts. Will look very carefully at my diet, other than caffeine I hadn't given much consideration to that, good idea. The only caffeine I use is prior to 11 am and even then, I've cut that in half in the last two weeks.
