Melatonin is a systemic hormone with unknown long term effects on the mind and body. It has not been proven safe or effective for chronic insomnia, and isn't recommended by the AASM, the sleep docs in the US. There are better ways.
Your doc will help you either treat or eliminate the possibility of an underlying medical condition, but don't be surprised if you have none. Most insomnia is primary.
In that case look to nonmedical root causes, and the best way to address those are through CBT sleep training programs. That's likely what your doc will recommend.
