Another approach is taking magnesium. According to most experters, if you are not taking a magnesium supplement you are about 80% likely to be deficient in this critical mineral. There are many forms of magnesium, and therefore, many forms of magnesium supplements. As with melatonin, I would recommend an extended release brand such as one of the types from Jigsaw Health located in Arizona. THey sell a handful of other types of supplements, but extended release magnesium is their number 1 product. Although we take a higher dose, they recommend a starting dose of 250mg in the morning and another 250mg at night (4 pills total). Magnesium has been called the "great relaxer" by a well known cardiologist, but do not expect a knockout punch from either the magnesium or the melatonin. But together, you may find them very helpful.
Good luck and do not worry about using sleep aids. Remember that not sleeping at least 7 hours a night is considered to be very bad for your health.
