It's bad because even though alcohol may initially induce drowsiness and sleep, after a few hours when it wears off you are left with a stimulating rebound that disrupts sleep. This is similar to many substances that initially make you drowsy. Beware the rebound effect!
This is why drinkers often wake up too early, dehydrated and with a headache, and their sleep is often fragmented and unrefreshing. I know it's happened to me like that.
There are much better ways. CBT for one.
