Shortly after D-Day, my wife was diagnosed with thyroid condition known as Grave's Disease.
Its a hyperthyroid condition that can cause health problems ranging from bone loss, heart damage, and weight loss. In extreme cases it can cause goiters and bulging eyes.
It can also cause irratic behavior.
She likely had this condition for at least a year leading up to the affair. She was noticeably revved up most of the time, talking really fast and rushing around like she had sucked down three or four cups of espresso. Her weight dropped from her usual 110-115 to 103 lbs.
Frankly, she was hornier than usual too. We were having sex nearly every day and many days more than once. All that was going on during the summer of '08...even while she was having the affair. I traveled a lot that summer for work and would be away typically two or three days during the week. That's when she would get together with the OM.
She's now on meds that have her levels back under control. She's bummed that she's put on about 10 lbs but she looks better and is certainly more relaxed.
So here's the question. Can a hyperactive thyroid be responsible on some level for my wife's choices that summer? She brings it up often when we discuss the affair. She says that its not really her fault; she was not herself at that time because of the Grave's Disease.
I don't know much about the thyroid but I have done a bit of research on the web and the Grave's Disease support group page on DS and don't see anything posted by anyone that would suggest or confirm some sort of link between thyroid function and infidelity.
Is that a stretch? I mean, she knew that what she doing was wrong. I'm trying to be understanding without being gullible.

I think, yes she was sick, but choices are choices. She consciously made the decision to sleep with the OM on the days you weren't there. I'm sorry, but cheaters need to own it...not give excuses for it.

I could see her saying, 'Hey, I had this going on and I should have seen that there was more to it - that I really was NOT myself - and this could have contributed to my judgement, but damn, even with that, I screwed up. No one else. Just me.'

You want to believe that something OTHER than your wife did this. Something beyond her control. I understand how that may make it easier for you. Unfortunately, it was all her....and no disease led her to do it. If she falls back on that, she is making an excuse to herself...NOT GOOD. She needs to accept what she did as a personal choice and address it...WITHOUT THE GRAVES excuse.
If someone killed your loved one while drunk.....would you accept that excuse?
It may cause racing thoughts, racing heartbeat, hyperactivity, inability to sleep, loss of appetite, brittle bones, hair, dry skin..lots of things..but not infidelity.
Sorry. She knew exactly what she was doing all the way down the road. If she is trying to lay that shit on you, I would be pissed as hell!!! That is like saying it isnt your fault you hit someone when you were drunk!!! Sure it was!! You may have been drunk, but you made the choice to get behind the wheel. Besides, I am telling you from my own experience, when my thyroid is hyperactive, it I am in full control of myself..just hyper! lol
