Why waste your time on building valuable trusting relationships? This has fanned out into the rest of the relationships he has with the other people in his life. As you mentioned, his friends, they lie and cover up for each other, why would you be doing anything different with your friends and family. Honest and healthy dynamics confuse and intimidate him.
