My RE does a Hystroscopy to check for abnormalities in the uterus, fibroids, cysts, and if there is fluid blockage in your tubes that might drain into the uterus and increase risk of miscarriage. We were given the option to have cystic fibosis testing. We declined because it would drag this thing out another month and it wouldn't really change our minds about trying for a baby.

As far as tests before IVF this is what we did:
--Baseline transvaginal Ultrasound
--Catheter check
--Cultures and papsmear
--Hystroscope
--Day 3 labs and blood tests for infectious disease, thyroid, rubella, prolactin, CBC.
--A nursing consult, financial consult, and injectible meds class

Hubby had to do a semen analysis and a blood draw for infectious disease testing.

Here's a list I used. Some of these may not apply. They may not be covered but I would recommend them. I found out I had a gene mutation for blood clotting that was interfering with implanation. Unfortunately, I found out too late and we couldn't afford to do more cycles. So please consider biting the bullet and insisting on them. Most REs won't and I don't understand why.

I agree with GirlAtHeart, yesterday I just had them run a lot of those tests because I miscarried 3 weeks ago after my first IVF and before I go through it again I want to make sure I'm okay and not causing it.

But even if you do not take all these tests, try to stay positive that your IVF will work and you will have a baby in your arms. I had 4 failed IUI's and tried numerous other drugs that never worked. I know my IVF ended up in miscarriage, but at least I finally was able to get pregnant and praying next time is finally my time!

I am starting my first IVF cycle and had the same tests that MightyMel mentioned. Supposed to stop taking birth control pill today and go back Tuesday and will prob start injections then.

The problem I ran into was it seems like the RE's use the first IVF cycle as a "test run"...meaning they don't know how your body will do so they are just trying it out. Obviously this is just my own opinion but my RE wouldn't do any testing unless he thought it was neccessary, and he wouldn't know it was neccessary until after the cycle was a failure. It was frustrating but although my first cycle failed, he was able to completely readjust things for my second cycle and it worked.
Just keep the faith that IVF can work and go into this cycle with a lot of positive thoughts!
Oh, also, the good thing about IVF is that they monitor your uterine lining before they transfer the embryo, so they will stop your cycle if they don't feel like the lining is right for implantation.
So when do you start? Are you doing PGD?

Thanks, everyone! You all have really helpful advice. I have gone thru most of the tests you mention, MightyMel and GirlAtHeart - that is an awesome list, thank you SO much! Unfortunately, I think my RE is approaching this exactly as ZeldaSayre puts it, as a "test" cycle since its my first. We want to do PGD testing, but its not covered by insurance and they charge $5,000 to $8,000 for it!!! I'm going to talk to my RE again on Monday and ask more, and see if I can get some of the further testing. Good luck to you all and thanks again for the great advice.
