I believe it depends on your insurance coverage/plan. I would advise you to call your benefits specialist or even your RE office should have a financial counselor to advise you on costs for any proceedure you may need.

From what I understand in most cases, if not all, insurance will not cover an IVF cycle if a surrogate is used. I have really good insurance and live in a state where IF has great mandated coverage but we will not be covered if we go the surrogate route. When we discussed surrogacy with our RE she said that it is usually more expensive then adoption because you have to pay for the cycle, any surrogacy fees and then to adopt your baby in many states (mine included). Yes, it is true that in a lot of states you would have to adopt your own baby if someone else carried your embryo and gave birth to the baby for you. That is not the case in all states though.

But, I would suggest you contact your insurance company to find out for sure what they will and will not cover. Also, I am not sure what the surrogates insurance company will cover for them or if you have to pay all or some of their medical fees during pregnancy and delivery. You may want to look into the laws surrounding using a surrogate in your state. I remember someone on here once telling me that their surrogate lived in NY but was going to NJ to give birth (or vice versa) to avoid the adoption issue.
