PCOS is an endocrine disorder. Typical patients are insulin resistant, overweight, have excess facial/body hair, have difficulty losing weight, and often do not ovulate and/or do not have regular periods, some have fertility issues as well.
There are a few treatment options. The typical treatment is either metformin (glucaphage) for women who are ttc or birth control for women who do not want to become pregnant.
The metformin actually treats the PCOS by helping to combat the insulin resistance, and restoring hormonal balance.
There is a lot of good info out on the web, but I would suggest speaking to an endocrinologist as they are more well versed in the disease than an OB/GYN, or primary.
Good luck hun!
