My husband and I started our process for having a baby back in October. After 5 months of being on Clomid we gave up with our regular OB and went to see an RE. I remember the day we sat in her office and I told my husband I didn't think we even needed to be there. Maybe we just hadn't timed things right, or maybe I was too stressed out to make this all work. Well, after almost a month, I'm glad we went. Not happy about the continual bad news we keep getting, but at least we know so we can move in the right directions.
First we did our genetic testing as well as an HSG test that morning for me and a semen analysis for my husband. Great news was, my fallopian tubes were free and clear! Bad news was (after waiting 10 days, going through IUI prep, ordering my IUI injections, and taking our injections class for IUI...all of this because I'm PCOS) that his semen analysis came back on the poor side. He didn't make enough sperm and what he did make had low motility and 3/4 of them weren't "Normal". After all of this IUI prep, we were then told the only way we could conceive was by IVF. What a blow! I know it could be worse, we could be told we couldn't conceive at all. But when we had walked so far down the IUI road, only to be told it wasn't a possibility...it was quite devastating.
Tomorrow we head back to our RE for another semen analysis on my husband. They also want to do genetic testing on him because his tests results were so low they think he could have a genetic birth defect or something.
I'm scared to death. What if the next semen analysis comes back bad again? Which, I'm sure it will. Our doctor said with results that low, it was probably going to happen. Sigh...
But now we're trying to gear up for IVF. Does IVF ever work on the first try? I'm just looking for hope. Every time my husband and I discuss this, he breaks down and cries. I'd just like to know that we're not alone in this. Our pastor assures us we aren't...but when you're so depressed, it's hard. Which I'm sure all of you know.

There are options - not easy decisions to make - but it will not be over for you, if the semen analysis does still come back poor.
and yes, IVF can work the first time around. There is nothing you can do to determine the result, so try not to put too much pressure on yourself. eat well (but don't be crazy), drink water, rest when they say to rest and let science (and prayer, if you believe in it) take care of the rest.
When we had to move on to IVF (after 3 failed IUIs and almost 2 years of trying naturally before that, including on clomid for five months), I was terrified. I am still scared every day. but we keep moving forward, b'c that's what we do - and you can do it, too, I promise.

You're not alone. I know it can feel isolating when no one in your "real life" is struggling with infertility. But please know we're here for you.

My first IVF worked on the first try (fresh transfer). It ended in a mc at 9 weeks but that was due to my crappy eggs.

My fingers are crossed his SA comes back better than last. There is a lot they can do to help the sperm so don't give up. Your journey just started but I pray it is over fast.
IVF worked for me 1st time so there is hope, I am only 5w3d so were being very cautious since I have never been pregnant before.

P.s....while I was waiting for my husband to get done with his analysis I was sitting in the waiting room. I watched a lady walk back to the exam room, then 10 minutes or so, walk out, and she was crying. I knew she hadn't gotten good news, and my heart went out to her. It also scared me to death. I hope that makes sense.
