I completeky understand. I have 3 days left of them, have been getting them in my butt for 12 weeks now.
We switch cheeks every other night. I lay on the bed, so my muscle is not tight at all. I have never iced it beforehand, but heard that helps. My DH just sticks it in and tries to do it slow so it doesn't hurt so bad.
I have him rub the area afterwards too. This seems to move the oil around a little bit.

my friend read for my somewhere not to ice it. oil wont spread in cold. put the bottle in your bra for 15-30 minutes to warm it up. dont put it in hot water it'll be too hot.
then do the shot.
then i had DH massage the area for 10 minutes to spread the oil then a heating pad for 15 minutes . it really realy helps. good luck.

Unfortunatly the only place you can receive the shots are in your butt. I know it sucks but that is part of this fun process. I usually don't ice before. My husband rotates sides and I lean over a chair with my weight on the opposite foot than the injection side. I then use a heating pad for 15 minutes. I also feel that the shots hurt worse my 2 IVF cycle and I am not sure why. Good luck with your shots!!

I was told I could do it in my thigh if my butt started to hurt to much. My nurse did say that my leg would hurt more since the muscle is closer to the top then it is in the hip. I do everything you have already said, ice and heating pad. My poor rear is so bruised up! Everytime Jason does a shot I keep repeating "this is for our babies" over and over. It does not help the pain, but a good reminder of why I am in pain.

I had to lean over a chair and bite on a towel or sweat shirt, what ever I could find. It also makes a big difference if my DF did not inject in the right area. It should be in the upper, outer quarter of your "bum"
I think if he injects it a bit slower it hurt less too.
Is there any way you can switch to the vaginal kind if it is that bad?

I am having trouble walking because these shots hurt so much. They don't hurt going in, just afterwards. I just bought a heating pad and I massage the area for a few minutes. Good luck.

I know what you mean! My behind feels like a human pin cushion and have bruises. I've been doing the PIO shot for a week now and this is also my 2nd time around with it. I'm finding it harder this time too but I think it's because I have to do it daily and the 1st time it was every 3rd day. You're doing all the same things I am though. I do alternate sides to give the area a break for a day. I only ice for about 3 minutes and usually after I give myself the shot, my DH rubs the area to get the oil moving. I've added the heating pad to this time and it helps. I guess I'm no help but at least you know you're not alone! I don't know what else you could do.

Now I am totally freaked out over these shots. I am to start them tomorrow. I am not sure if I want to stand or lie down whenDH gives them to me. We are thinking to lie on my belly so that I am completely relaxed in the buttox area. I also will be less likely to jump when he stick in in. I will be doing the suppositories when I have to go out of town. .....me2007..why dont you find out if your clinic will allow you to do the sappository too. It will give your butt a chance to heal.

Sometimes if it is hurting that bad that means that the shot is in the wrong place. There is a big nerve that runs back there and you may be hitting it. Have your Doc office circle where it should be with a sharpie. I find that the best thing is to have DH rub after and then to get the muscle moving. This circulates the oil faster and helps the muscle from stiffening up. I jump on the tread mill or do the stairs for a little bit. DH tonight did not go far enough back from hip bone and I am going to be sore tomorrow no matter how long I get on the tread mill. Other than tonight, I don't find them that bad. Check placement of injection site.

I am scheduled to start FSH shots next week, for IUI. I am so freaked out about it & will have to do this myself since DH almost passed out when we took his blood test, ther is no way he would be able to give them to me. Then I am even more freaked out about the shots you guys are speaking of!

I am starting my PIO shots tonight. I am really scared. This will be our first time. I gave myself all the other shots..they were easy. But this needle is a monster! So, I am taking in all the suggestions on which way is best to do it. I am not gonna ice ..but I am gonna do heating pad afterwards. If it does not hurt..I will continue it that way. Does it hurt going in?

I was just reading your comment about this. Way back in Nov when I started my IVF my Dr knew how scared I was of the shots so he changed my protocal an gave me crinone vaginal oil instead. I searched it in the internet and alot of women who are doing IVF in Europe use it. So why don't you guys ask your Dr about this?
My cycle was cancealed due to no producing a lot of eggs.Just wanted to tell you there might be something else out there....

make sure you rotate the spot, that is the main thing , heat is better than ice since it is oil. make sure the muscle is not tight when your hubby gives it to you. you can go in the thigh but that will hurt more with an IM shot

Thanks for all the responses!!! You guys are the best. Last night I actually tried no ice and it was so much better!! I have been rotating between cheeks but still seems to hurt but I will continue with no ice and hopefully that will help. Starr13 try it with no ice first!!! Good luck and you will do just fine.
