Your RE will help you make the decision on how many are of quality to transfer, based on your age, etc. Personally, I would freeze any that are left over...

T!e first round of IVF we had 13 eggs, but only three were good enough to be fertilised and then implanted. We didn't get pregnant that round.

Our second round we had 18 eggs, 12 fertelised with ICSI and three implanted. The remaining 9 eggs we have frozen. We are now pregnant!

I just did a round of IVF and am awaiting my test results. We had 9 eggs retrieved, only 4 fertilized.

The original plan was to transfer 1 and freeze the rest. On the day 3 transfer, we discovered that they had not divided as nicely and we had the following "report card":
6 cell B
6 cell B-
5 cell B-
2 cell B-

To transfer, we needed 6-8 cells in our REs eyes, so the 6B was a definite. The RE looked at the B- and said that it was unlikely that the grade would improve outside my uterus and that the grade of B+ or above would be required for freezing. We therefore transferred two embryos.

Because the grades on the other two were not sufficient for a day 3 freeze, we waited for day 5 to see if they improved. We were unfortunate that by day 5, the other two embryos had stopped growing and died.

The key is that the lab will charge the same fee whether you freeze one or 6 embryos. Oftentimes they ask if you will want to freeze one. We paid for the procedure out of pocket so even freezing one would be a better cost advantage to us than undergoing the whole procedure again. However, there were still decisions that needed to be made in a split second, so it's a roller coaster...be prepared with as MUCH information as you can have, but know that you may never be COMPLETELY prepared....

I have only done 1 round of IVF, but I remember wondering the same things you are asking. They retrieved 10 eggs, only 2 fertilized even with ICSI (DH has a really low quality and quantity sperm). Implanted both and none took. I did ask the nurse though half way through my cycle about how may to fertilize, freeze, etc and she was very helpful.

I did an IVF cycle in October 2010. We had 4 eggs retrieved, 3 fertilized and we transferred 2. We became pregnant and had a perfect baby girl last July. I was 31 at the time of my IVF cycle. Our leftover embryo did not make it to freeze, so we didn't have any leftover.

IVF #1: 13 eggs, 11 inseminated, 7 fertilized, but only 3 fertilized normally. Two transferred, my last embryo went out to blast and didn't make it. None to freeze. BFN
IVF #2: 28 eggs, 21 inseminated, 18 fertilized, and 12 matured. So, two transferred and the others frozen. Chemical Pregnancy.
FET#1: Transferred 3- Chemical Pregnancy.
FET #2: Natural cycle FET- Transferred 3- BFP! My son was born last August. I still have 4 frozen and hope to transfer later this year. Also, I should say that all of my embryos have been day 3 transfers. My RE lets us choose- but recommends transferring earlier because he believes nothing can replicate a uterus. Some facilities only do blastocyst but I firmly believe that I probably wouldn't have gotten my son that way... Best of luck to you!!!!

So Courage2010, you can unfreeze just one or two at a time then, you don't have to unfreeze them all? Or did you have them frozen separately?

Our 1st cycle we had 19 eggs retrieved, 17 fertilized with ICSI. We pushed to day five and had 8 make it we froze 7 and transferred 1 which resulted in a miscarry at 6 weeks. Our 2nd cycle FET got canceled because I didn't respond well to the estrogen we are now in the midst of round 3- FET.

They froze ours separately so that we can thaw individually depending on our thaw plan. If we use them all and are unsuccessful we would go again through a full cycle. If a round works we will hold the rest for when we are ready to go again. If we succeed w/ some left they will keep them frozen for 5 years at an annual cost to "house" them for us.

JA- They are frozen in either two or single. I will be transferring two next time and hopefully I'll get pregnant. If you have any questions- don't hesitate to message me. There are tough decisions but you'll get through just fine ;) I think the decisions are one of the hardest parts of infertility- hang in there!!!!

Hi and welcome to the IVF journey!
I did a fresh cycle last May- 11 eggs retrieved, 9 initially fertilized (with ICSI), 4 made it to 5 day freezing (had to freeze to have a polyp removed). Did a frozen cycle in August. Transferred 2, both implanted, but one was an empty sac. The other....is due in 5 and 1/2 weeks!
I know it's a lot of decision and getting stories and advice here can definitely help! Try to also never leave the doctor's office without having ALL of your questions answered.

Congrats Goldennote! Thats great! Unfortunately I'm not all that new to IF (3.5 years) but this if the first time we are getting some help and hoping to make it happen! Thanks for your advice and encouraging words! I hope I am as luck as you!

IVF # 1 - 17 retreived, 13 were mature, 8 fertilize, 5 made it to 5-day stage. We couldnt do transfer right away as I had OHSS.
FET # 1 - 2 transferred, 1 took off, misscarried in 5th week.
FET # 2 - out of remaining 3, 2 survived the thaw and transferred. one took off but again misscarried in 10th week.

IVF # 2 - 36 retreived, 34 were mature. 18 fertilized and 13 made it to 5-day stage. Couldnt do transfer again due to severe OHSS ( i was hospitalized for 3 days this time)
FET # 3 - transferred 2 - chemical pregnancy
FET # 4 - transferred 3 - one took off and now I have 1.5 month old son. He was born premature at 30 weeks. He is still in NICU but doing great.

I still have 8 embies frozen for which I am paying $400 per year for storage.
Believe me you will have to make tough decisions sometimes. Be prepared for that. But at the end all will be worth it. Please dont lose hope... IVF WORKS !!!

I'm a poor responder to meds (low AMH) but they managed to get 4 eggs and 3 of them fertilized. All grade 1. Two were transferred one was frozen. One of the two implanted, but I miscarried at 8 weeks. Will unfreeze the frozen embryo this summer.

IVF #1 - 8 eggs retrieved, 7 fertilized, 2 transferred, 2 frozen - BFN

Because we only had two frozen and for the next cycle, my RE wanted to transfer three, we did another fresh cycle for IVF #2.

IVF #2 - 7 eggs retrieved, 4 fertilized, 3 transferred, 1 frozen - BFP! (Expecting a baby girl on July 26, 2012.)

Note that I am 41 years old so these are actually good numbers for someone my age.

We have three frozen embryos and are planning to use them!

Hi IVF 9 eggs were retrieved, 8 fertilized with icis, 3 made it to day 5 transfer. My doc believes day 5 transfer is best cause at that stage they are blastocyctes and that is the stage they goes from your fallopian tubes to the uterus. So, it goes along with the natural timeline.Plus,it weeds out the eggs of lesser quality that probably wouldnt make it or would misscarry,making ivf more successful.I had one froze and two put in.I m now 7 and half weeks pregnant with twins.
