Financing Treatments

With a new year comes budget-planning and I have been trying to figure out the best way to use our financial resources for treatments. My husband and I have a decent combined income and we are fairly modest about our spending. However, we live in a state (Alabama) where we receive little or no insurance coverage for advanced treatments. I am thankful that my insurance policy covers medications with a reasonable co-pay. Treatments like IUI and IVF are, of course, out-of-pocket expenses.

I have heard of several people doing IVF 3 or more times and I cannot for the life of me figure out where they get the money to do this. (I know it's not cheap.) My DH and I have some funds reserved in savings, but we're talking thousands of $$$ for each attempt - it could all be wiped out in an instant.

I have heard about shared risk programs and even some research studies (would like to know more) that cover some expenses. I would be interested in hearing from some of you on what you're doing to finance such treatments.

my dh and i chose to go out of state (we live in arkansas) we did quite a bit of research and chose arc of euless texas they are less expensive because my insurance will not pay for anything except pre testing. so being monitored at my regular ob/gyn can be set to payments and the cost after the deduct monitoring is about $4900 + meds my fertility doctor has 20 yrs experience. I don't know if this is what u are looking for but i hope it helps

My DH and I are starting our first IVF treatment. We have a decent income but we spent most of our savings on previous treatments that didn't work. We are going to be meeting with a financial planner. We bought our home several years ago and due to the area we live in our home value has at least doubled. We are probably going to take out a home equity loan and use it to pay for our treatments. I'm not sure if you know this but you can deduct fertility treatments on your taxes but only if the cost of the treatment equals a certain percent of your salary(at least that's what my tax guy told me). I forget what the percentage is(I want to say it's 7% but I'm not sure). Keep all your reciepts from treatments and meds because you may be able to deduct them later. I hope this helped. Good luck.

We are in the same boat in Texas. I have no coverage and it's about $10k a pop (without meds). We looked into clinics with shared risk programs but they didn't come as highly recommended as the full price option, so we went full price. "You get what you pay for" so they say.

We applied for a health care credit card. They have an 18 mo no interest financing program that weve opted to use. We figured well make the minimum monthly payments with are on about a 24 month payoff cycle, and pay the balloon with bonuses from work, which we are fortunate to receive, or savings. At least that way we arent depleting our savings. DH calls it his Baby Card.

Medical expenses are also deductible from Federal taxes (dont know about State) if there are above a certain percentage of your income. You can add up your monthly payments, all co-pays for services and prescriptions, any out of pocket expenses and even some other expenses, like glasses and contacts. With the expense of IVF we qualify for the deduction this year and are putting back toward the Baby Card.
