There is an estrogen surge just before ovulation, that helps with the final push to get the egg out. The estrogen produced in the ovaries is precisely targeted to where it's needed. Blood in the uterine cavity drains directly to the liver, which is supposed to deactivate every molecule that it sees, before it can get into general circulation. I'm sure it misses a few estrogens, but this is the theory.
Estrogen suppresses the amount of oxygen available. Many chemicals have effects that are similar to estrogen - BPA, insecticides, fish oil - in that they also decrease the amount of oxygen available. One researcher found 40-some-odd years ago that it is this suppression of oxygen that suffocates embryos.
The effects of Estrogen are supposed to be mitigated by the anti-estrogenic vitamins, the anti-estrogen amino acids, and the hormones that promote the availability of oxygen and glucose to the cells. But our diets don't have nearly as much of the fat-soluble vitamins as they used to, due to changes in how food is produced (feedlots, industrial agriculture, margarine, etc).
