I think you should tell them in an age appropriate way when they are old enough to understand. I used donor sperm to conceive my son and did a fair bit of reading on this before going ahead. Most of what I've read says it's better for the child to know. If they somehow find out later, as an adult for example, and you weren't open with them, they could feel very angry.

Also you don't have to share it with anyone else. The way I see it is that my son's birth story and conception information belongs to him. He can share it with whoever he wants when he's old enough. In the meantime, I have only shared this information with my closest friends.

Hi there. We are trying for our second donor egg cycle right now. Initially we were only going to tell our family and the baby. Then baby can share with whomever when they are ready. Recently we had a change of heart about keeping our infertility secret altogether! Not only have we been openly sharing with friends and family but I started a blog for everyone to follow along with our cycle. I feel like now there will be no way for the potential baby to feel like we hid anything from anyone. Although, I think either way is fine as long as you aren't hiding it from the child. Lanarsa, I believe this question is a rather contradicting one. We're also in the case of egg donation. Passing our program in Biotexcom clinic at the moment. We haven't had our transfer yet, it might happen in a couple of days.
I always think about would my baby like to know one day that he came to this world to another woman's egg. And have so many conflicting things in my head that it looks like sometimes I'm going mad. From the one point of view I don't want to "share" this relation with anyone else except my loving husband. From the other hand genetics may play trick on us bringing some distinctive features my husband nor I have, for ex. What if my baby will resemble much of his genetic mum!?!
This insults me so much! Probably I'm too egoistic here unwilling to "share" my precious tiny.
Right now i'm about getting used to the thought one day my baby will get to know about the real circumstances. And this undoubtedly will be the toughest period in our family life. But I think this is the right of any person to know everything about her roots.
I'll be praying for this idea never changes for us with time..
