Desperate for encouragement

Me: single, 35 years old, ttc for 1 year using donor sperm. Tried ICI at home 4 times, then 3 unmedicated IUIs, and 1 medicated IUI.


I'm so frustrated and depressed by my lack of success. I have a low AMH level, indicating low ovarian reserve, so the clock is ticking. My medicated IUI was following an ultrasound that showed 3 mature follicles but not one of them took. I just don’t understand what is wrong with me and why I can’t get pregnant. I feel like I’m running out of time. I’m stressed and depressed and feel like giving up. I’m alone in all this, and desperately sad. I hate my body, I hate this process, and I hate the fertility clinic! Every time I turn around I see pregnant women and babies and I can’t handle it! How do you all cope? What works for you? How many more times should I try before giving up?

Have you thought about IVF? I’m sorry you’re going thru this ordeal. Those of us who are married are also experiencing fertility problems. You’re not alone. And do not give up. You could always change doctors too.

I am so sorry to hear what you are going through right now. Have you thought about switching doctors? In my opinion I encourage those who are having second thoughts to switch right away. I finally listened to my instinct and switched doctors it was one the best decisions I have made. Hopefully they will be able to steer you in the right direction. Praying for you xoxo

Have you considered doing a biopsy of your uterine lining to see if it is able/ ready for implantation. That could tell you more information and result in med changes. Don't give up!

Having done 7 IUIs, I will say - do not give up! I think the first few that don't work are the most frustrating. Because you look at the situation and you say, okay, everything was timed perfectly, I had follicles ready to go, I had the sperm injected into my uterus at the right time...how could it not work?! And if everything was perfect this time and it didn't work, who says it will work next time? Nothing is wrong with you that it didn't work; you just need more chances, like many other people (including myself). I'm so sorry you have to go through this alone and I am sure it is so hard and frustrating. Sending strength and hugs to help you.

Do not give up. There are so many that have been on this journey for a long time and finally saw a light at the end of the tunnel. I agree with others about possibly switching doctors.

Re IVF: It’s too expensive and my insurance doesn’t cover any fertility treatments. Also, because of my low AMH, I was told I would probably need more than 1 round.

Re switching doctors: I live in a rural area. This clinic I’m using is the only one anywhere close to me and it’s still an hour away. The next closest would be 3 or so hours away. It’s just not feasible with having to go so frequently.

I’m trying not to be too discouraged, but the clinic told me that with medicated IUIs it usually happens the first 3 tries or not at all. So I feel like the pressure is on. There’s nothing apparently wrong, but it’s just not working. It’s so hard some days...

Hi BeaBea,

I echo what others here have written and appreciate the added strain of being single through this process. I am also and have gone through 6 IUIs, 3 IVFs, and 1 FET, all unsuccessful. Single Mothers By Choice has been a great resource for me, both a local group that meets monthly and the online forums. There are so many women like us going it alone who provide amazing support even from a distance. I wish you the best. It is such a hard process and I really hope you have a good outcome.
