I just called my OB/Gyn to move my appointment from late October to as early as poss so he can refer me to the IF specialist and we can get started on IVF.

The earlies he can fit me in is the 1st of October which means that it will only be a few days before my period starts and I may not be able to get to see the IF specialist until after my period start!
as far as I understand that would mean that it would be too late to start a cycle (is that correct?) and thus, I am really tempted to go ahead and call the specialist's office and get an appointment for the next day that I see my ob/gy. The only problem is that my current doctor is such a cranky bastard that I am almost afraid to do it (when I went to see another specialist for a burst cyst without seeing him first, he actually got really pissed at me and almost made me cry!). I would tell him where to go but he is the best ob/gyn in the area and I really trust him in spite of his crankiness...

what do you think I should do? should I wait or should I just call and put up with the old crank when I see him on the 1st???

any thoughts would be appreciated!

I agree with Jakeswife. I know the feeling of wanting to get started..but chances are you wont start right away anyway. They will need to diagnose you and in order to do that they will have to do many tests on you and significant other. Even your first appointment will most likely just be a consult..background info...etc

I agree with the other ladies. Even if your period starts you will have a lot of paper work, blood work and other tests to do. You'll have to wait to get the results back before you can go forward. If there is anything wrong you will want that fixes first, so you can have a good out come. It took about 6-7 weeks from when I started the paper work and everything else before I actually started my meds. I had to have an operation before I could start my meds. I think it may only take 4-5 weeks for you. As long as there is nothing wrong. I know it's seems like it will never come, but it will. Good luck!

mmm I have already been diagnosed (unexplained infertility), had all the tests and a lap with my current doc... will this mean that I have to go through all that again! oh boy I really hope not!!!

If you don't need a referral for insurance purposes, by all means, research and choose your own RE and make an appointment. Your OB/Gyn needs to be a big boy and get over it. Like Jakeswife said, you will not do meds your first full cycle because they will want to measure your hormones at different times in your cycle to find out where the problem is. It sometimes takes forever to get into a RE's office anyway.

I am in agreement with everyone else. I thought i would start right away once we made the decision and it was a month and a half later. The first month I had my consult (right before AF) and then they told me the protocol and things like that...then told me to come in for B/W on day 3 of my cycle. Then make an appointment for the next month to get started. In addition to it all needing to coincide with your AF my doctors office only does IVF on certain months in his office that way he can keep up with everyone in a more timely manner. Its hard to wait but hopefully it is all worth it in the end. (oh and BTW i knew what my problem was already too prior to stepping foot in the RE)

I started with my RE on CD 2. He did the first US and blood tests the same day. I didn't get a referral from my OB I just went to the RE. The very first day he told me that I had PCOS. So I wouldn't wait just go. :)

I work of an Internal Medicine office and have worked for a family pratice office also. You do not need to see your regualr OB/GYN just to get referred to a specialist for IF. You are able to go on your own to see the IF specialist if you know where you are going. If your insurance needs referrals (HMO insurance) then you just have to call your primary care dr for the referral submission. Most of the time referrals are done through the Primary Care trust me I do them all the time. You can also call your insurance to see if you need to see your OB/GYN

As for you OB/GYN giving you crap before for seeing another specialist when you had a cyst, I wouls not put up wiht that and try to find another OB/GYN. Just think when you do get PG is this the type os person you want to deliver your baby?

I will however call the re's office and see if I can make an appointment to speak to him and get a referal from my primary doctor like it was suggested by jeep girl1 just to make me feel better if nothing else

I was diagnosed in June with Turner's Syndrome, and already done 4 months of testing, 3 to go.
We're just hoping my reserves don't run too low before we get started as I'm about 1-2years off of menopause.
I start IVF in Dec/Jan.

I hate waiting so effing much.

Would anyone like to get together on a mountain somewhere to just scream???
I think it might help a little, because I'm damned sure all this healthy eating and avoidance of alcohol is not going to make me feel relaxed.

Bring on Xmas2010, when one way or another I'll be sipping a glass of white wine with my dinner, not organic, turd flavoured juice.

I am on a HMO and had a similiar issue with my OB-GYN. He is brilliant but wanted to treat me himself for infertility, so didn't want to refer me to an RE. I went to my primary care doctor and got him to do the referral instead- perhaps you could try that route?
