We are considering adoption and we are trying to gather information as to how to proceed, and we were just wondering if anyone has any advice about how to get started, how to find a reputable agency, estimated cost, etc.?? We live in Nevada, however we would definitely consider out-of-state adoption. We would appreciate any and all information that anyone may have. We realize that at my age of 43, the chances are SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED in having a biological child, but we feel that we have a lot of love to give a child who needs a healthy home!

I am actually going to make an appt today with an agency to find out the answers to those questions too. We have had 3 failed IUI's and are on the fourth and last one. We are considering IVF, but want to look into all options. The hard part is that adopting a new born is going to run about the same price as IVF, so I'm struggling with this. (and the waiting list is YEARS) We are also considering an older child. I just don't know what to do. Good luck! If i get any answers I will let you know.

I'm very interested in what advice people might give on this. My husband and I are looking at all options but I am at a loss as to how to go about adoption. If I find anything out, I'll be sure to pass it on!

Check with your employer to see if they have any employee assistance programs (your HR dept. should be able to tell you). Sometimes EAPs have adoption assistance information.
If they do not, call your OB/GYN and let them know you are interested in adoptions and they may be able to point you in the right direction or directly to a reputable agency.
You can also call your local Dept. of Health and Human Services. They should be able to get you in touch with state adoption agencies and information. But if you do call DHHS remember they are a govorntment run agency and they tend to be grouchy individuals and are sometimes jerks to talk to.
Hopefully one of these avenues pans out for you. I've done all 3 (I'm still in the info gathering stage) and I've gotten a lot of information.
One last thing. You can also just Google "child adoption in (enter your state here)." Most states have a .org website now that have all sorts of info on state programs of all kinds, from jobs to DMV info, and even to adoption and foster care info.

My DH and I want to adopt but need to wait tell we move... We live in Arkansas and one of the adoption agencies near by want over 19,000... And they want over 3,000 before they decided of ur a canidet for adoption... So we are hoping to find something more affordable somewhere else... Good luck

There was about 4 months where we were seriously pursuing adoption. We had narrowed it down to 2 agencies. One was local (and did local adoptions) and the other wasn't http://www.bethany.org/ .

All agencies do like an open house/intro sort of thing a couple of times a year (all that I looked into anyway). So, once you narrow it down, those can be a big help.

And I also thought of another place to look to for information. You can call a family law office. They might be able to assist you but will probably want money up front.

My husband and I are considering it and we did a phone consult with a group of attorneys called the Adoption Network. They are based out of CA but find birth mothers and place children in 50 states. They seem very reputable and do a lot of screening of the birth mothers to weed out for who is not going to follow through etc (they say they turn many away). They market you so that you are chosen over other adoptive parents (they take avg 4 months to find a match). They also provide support to the birth mother so that she feels well supported and does not regret her decision. They also have a money back guarantee if the birth parents change their minds.. any they are attorneys so the legal part is solid. All the charges together are between 35K and 45K... Some of it is tax deductible. Kind of crazy money but it might be worth it to find a good match. We are waiting to see what the future holds.

I work at Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio and they offer adoption classes. It is run by Capital Law School. There is one for general information, domestic (foster care & newborn) adoption and international adoption. Social workers, Lawyers, Adoptive parents, Birth parents, and Adoptive children (who are now adults) come and speak at the class. They talked about the process, laws, emotions, costs, just about everything. We recieved all kinds of resources and were told of the two good agencies in our area. It was very informative and helpful. All the speakers other than the parents/children gave us their contact information to ask questions.
