During 2 of our IUI's, my follicles were SO mature that I did a trigger and then IUI the very next day (rather than waiting 36 hours to do the IUI). During another one of my IUI's, I had to take an antagonist which would postpone my ovulation until I took the trigger shot.
So there is the possibility that your follicles could be mature and you could ovulate on your own before you get a chance to do the IUI. That's why I'm thinking your RE may have told you to try the night of the trigger.
In our case, we had 6 IUI's total and I went from ovulating just one egg while on Clomid, to finally my highest ovulation - 5 eggs after our 3rd try on Follistim. This last time, we did trigger 36 hours before IUI and got a BFP. Remember though, we tried many combinations prior to this so I think it's just finding the right timing that works for you. It's frustrating, I know, but hang in there, I'm sure your RE knows what he/she is talking about.
