HI Ladies!
I was just diagnosed with PCOS a couple of weeks ago. My doctor said that I have several small cists on both ovaries but that it should be able to be treated with Metformin? Does this disolve the cists? I also have to go in tomorrow for blood testing to check my hormone levels. The doctor said that my ovaries were normal size, and that my uteris was perfect, but tipped. I am just wondering where I stand in all of this. Is this going to make it even harder for me to get pregnant? We have been trying to conceive for seven years now. I have normally 6-7 periods a year, but seem to ovulate even if I miss a monthly. We also have had trouble getting pregnant because my husband has been unable to ejaculate during intercourse. It was never a problem before, but once we started trying to get pregnant, it was like he felt pressured, and he just cant anymore.. So I am thinking an IUI may be our only option. I am so GREEN when it comes to all of this. I dont even know where to start, what questions to ask my doctor.. what to expect. I am really nervous. And sorry if there was TMI in there from time to time. I just figured if I can't talk to you guys, who can I talk to? Any direction would be appreciated. Thank you!

I also am a newbie that has just been diagnosed with cysts on one of my ovaries. The specialist isn't sure if it is PCOS as I don't have any of the other symptoms. I have just finished my first round of bloodwork on days 3 and 21 to check my hormone levels.
From what I understand, Metformin is a diabetes drug that can help women with PCOS ovulate.
Has your husband had a semenanalysis done yet? This test will ensure that his sperm are healthy and plentiful.
My husband has just had this done, but we won't have the results until our next specialist appointment on Jan.22.
I am fairly new to all of this stuff as well, and I have found all of the information on the internet to be confusing.
Have you asked your doctor to refer you to a fertility specialist?

Metformin is a drug used by diabetics to help with their insulin production and resistance. Often times, women with PCOS also have insulin resistance, which leads to hyperinsulinemia (elevated blood fasting insulin). There is some research that shows elevated insulin levels leads to elevated androgen levels (mostly testosterone) that leads to anovulation (no ovulation), amenorrhea (no period) and infertility. This insulin resistance can also lead to Diabetes later on in life. The Metformin is supposed to increase the sensitivity of the muscle cells to insulin. So if your muscles absorb the insulin, then your body will regulate itself more appropriately and won't be making excess insulin. The hope is the decrease in excess insulin will help to decrease the androgen levels (like testosterone) which should hopefully help the body regulate back to normal and begin ovulating again. That's the theory anyway. But along with Metformin, I was also told a healthy diet and exercise routine were very important. You should talk to your doctor for sure about an exercise and diet program for you though. I never saw anything about it helping the cysts disappear though.
Like the other reply, I'd say your husband should get a semen analysis. And maybe the Metformin will help you ovulate regularly.
