Don't feel guilty for saying no. I agree with previous comment - you have to learn to say no.
I assume you're an adult now so you don't even need excuses. The answer is no, plain and simple, and there's no need for you to explain it away. I know that's a terrifying thought but it's freedom...freedom from the ties that have you bound.
I hope you're able, one day, to do this and know you're doing the right thing for YOU and that's okay!
It took me years to finally decide that I was having nothing-zero contact with my abuser-no matter what. It is really hard and it creates a lot of family issues at first, but it has been years for me and I am so glad that I never have to be in the same room with him again-and I never will.
Personally i think is detrimental to the abused.
Keep away! say 'no'. The more you keep away from them the more your strength will grow.
If you feel you need an excuse or that an excuse will help you when you tell them, then use an excuse, but you are an independent adult to whom they behave appallingly and you don't owe them any explanation.
