Incest Survivors Support Group
Incest refers to any sexual activity between closely related persons that is illegal or socially taboo. Consensual adult incest is very rare. Incest between adults and prepubescent or adolescent children is a form of child sexual abuse that has been shown to be one of the most extreme forms of childhood trauma. If you or a loved one is a survivor of incest, join the group...
I went to a support group before and nobody ever shared any of their history.. so we just stayed very superficial and never really got to know each other's issues. I have no idea what brought half the people there really (it was a combination of rape and incest survivors.. so that is all anyone really ever knew). I think that if after an appropriate amount of time, some sharing (limited is fine) was encouraged, we could have started to share with people who would able to be a great support system.
Because nobody ever invited it.. nobody ever shared (I think we were also always worried about burdening one another and maybe the therapists helping us understand that we weren't a burden to each other would have been nice). But in the end, I wonder how much any of us got from it. Nobody ever took a step to build that trust other than showing up - which I admit was a big step for a lot of us in the first place. But sometimes we need to be encouraged to take that next step.
I don't mean to be disagreeable, and I have no idea about the money other than paying for facilities and perhaps the therapists who are there? I mean.. who knows, that could really be an issue. But as for encouraging sharing.. I wish they would take a softer approach about how often, or how soon.. but I can see the benefit of at least wanting everyone to share at some point so one person doesn't feel exposed while others aren't?
I hope that makes sense, I promise I mean all of this respectfully.
I think what is happening is that because they are making money, they want to keep us dependent on the group, though it may be a subconscious intention. The leaders also bear no responsibility for their actions so that adds to the likelihood for corruption to take hold.
She didn't just merely suggest that I talk about abuse every time. She basically indicated that if I break this mandatory abuse talk rule, the next time I come to group, she will call the cops, which she is entitled to do by the ASCA guidelines.
It is this kind of power-tripping, criminal activity with everyone being tight-lipped that is what gets kids into abusive situations.
Again, all your comments were valid but I did need to clarify what is happening in this weird situation.
