Incest Survivors Support Group
Incest refers to any sexual activity between closely related persons that is illegal or socially taboo. Consensual adult incest is very rare. Incest between adults and prepubescent or adolescent children is a form of child sexual abuse that has been shown to be one of the most extreme forms of childhood trauma. If you or a loved one is a survivor of incest, join the group...

This is my first time doing anything like this. I never thought I would ever talk about this. I really need to, not only get this off of my chest, I need to confront this. I consider myself a strong person, but I really don't know what to do, it's been eating away at my soul for almost 30 years. Here goes:
First, I don't consider myself an incest survivor, I will elaborate why as I proceed. When I was younger, I'm 37 now, I was 7 at the time. I engaged in a consensual sexual relationship with my sister who was a year older than I.
My older brother of 5 years, my sister and I seldom played together, in fact, he and she were very close and I was the odd one out. Anyways, we started playing truth or dare together, as the sessions progressed, my brother would ask my sister truth or dare, and she would choose dare and he would usually give her a really disgusting option, and the other one would be to "put it in." She chose the second option and they would leave the room and do their thing.
This happened a couple of times and I started getting curious and jealous, and one time I asked if I could watch. And he let me, and they did there thing. I wasn't grossed out by it, I was aroused and I was jealous that they were doing it, and I wasn't. Plus, his penis was much larger than mine.
As time went on, my sister and I started doing it. First it was once or twice in a while. Then she and I would do it about 2 to three times a day. I liked it because I liked the closeness, I liked feeling like I was wanted. I again felt very inadequate because he did it better and had a bigger penis and she made more noises with him.I apologize if I am being graphic. Because it is these details that are the source of my problems.
Also, you may wonder where my parents were during all of this. My parents worked hard all day. They got up at 5. Left at 6 and usually came home around 8 or 9 at night. We had a lot of time to ourselves. Plus, my father was seldom around and my mother was always angry about one thing or another.
This went on for about a year. We would still play our game where I would ask her the vile choices so that I could watch my brother and her have sex. Then it progressed to where we both would have sex with her.
Then the game stopped and my brother stopped hanging out with us. He had girlfriends and such. My sister hated them. She would call them names and actually start threatening them. Then my brother started treating her very badly.
She and I resumed our relationship for about two more years. Again, I was glad that I had her to myself. At the same time, I felt very low about myself because I was nothing more than a substitute for him. We had sex 2-3 times a day. I wanted it. I wanted to please her, I wanted her to forget him. I wanted her to myself. Sometimes when we were home alone, we would play house and just do it all day. This seemed normal to me, nothing about it seemed wrong.
Then, one day she said that we had to stop. I didn't protest, but I was hurt. I felt discarded. I felt useless. Soon afterwards, she started getting very mean towards me. She'd get physically abusive. I wouldn't strike back because she was a girl and I couldn't hit a girl.
Our relationship deteriorated from then on. We essentially stopped talking. We wouldn't hang out together anymore. This combined with the fact that I was a very shy child. I had very few friends because I couldn't relate to other children, to me, they seemed stupid and very unintelligent. As a sidebar, in my academic career, I skipped two grades. I was teased unmercifully by the older kids because I was younger than they were. Plus my home life was disintegrating. My parents were never home. They never attended parent-teacher night, never hugged us or kissed us or showed any affection towards us.
Going from having constant physical contact to nothing really hurt me. I don't think I have ever recovered from it.
But, this story isn't about me, it's about my sister. She started getting into trouble at school. fights, mouthing off to teachers, skipping class and the like. My brother was running around the streets getting arrested, doing drugs and the like. My sister started doing the same.
I couldn't stand her, in fact, I was embarrassed by her, we went to the same school, despite the fact that she was a year older than I, I was two grades ahead because she got kept back a year.
She got worse and worse with each passing year. She eventually dropped out of school. Was in and out of rehab facilities for her drug and alcohol addiction. I forgot to mention that she was 16 at this point.
Fast forward to the future, she is 28 and she died of a heart condition. My brother treated her like she didn't even exist for the last 15 years of her life. I didn't do much better. I was disappointed with her decision making, or lack thereof. She died leaving 4 young girls behind. When she died, I felt relief.
It took many years later for me to realize a lot of things. I think my brother is directly responsible for her death. I think he used her and just threw her aside and treated her like shit. She loved him more than anyone else in the world. I think she was in love with him and she never got over his rejection.
I didn't do much better. I pretty much ignored her for the past 12 years of her life. I am just as guilty as he is.
Since she passed, I have been trying to heal my family and the wounds. I am making progress as we are finally close. I have a very close relationship with my brother. I am the Godfather to his youngest daughter. I am very proud of how he turned his life around.
This history has not had any discernibly negative effects on me. I do not have a sexual attraction to children, which I understand happens. I do love children very much and I am very nurturing, loving and fiercely protective of them.I am able to, and I currently have a happy, stable, functional long term adult relationships.
I am and I have been fighting with depression for as long as I can remember, I did try to commit suicide when I was twelve. I haven't since.
The only real negative effect is that I have an ungodly high amount of sexual energy. I want sex and I need it multiple times a day. When I don't have sex, I usually masturbate at least once a day. When I dated, I would try to find girls, ladies, or women who loved sex and would want it as much as I did. I usually found out that at some point in their life, they were molested. But they usually couldn't keep up with me.I am monogamous. I have NEVER cheated on any of my partners. No prostitutes, nothing.
Here is my problem. I feel ashamed of my past, not for what happened, but for how I felt about it, which was I wanted to do those things, I conspired with my brother so that I could watch and later partake. The fact that I wanted to do it. The fact that I enjoyed it. That is what I feel the most shame about. I could say that, I was young, and I wasn't emotionally equipped to make those types of decisions, or deal with the resultant fallout. I wasn't. But, I knew what I was getting into.
I am also ashamed because there are times when I still yearn for my sister's touch. Sometimes I wish she were still here, I wish that we could have resumed our relationship. I loved her, I turned my back on her, and I am ashamed of it. I have to live with her death, her blood is on my hands. I am ashamed of what I did. She didn't deserve it. She didn't deserve to die. I know it's not my fault. But, fuck. After sharing what we had, how could I have been so cold?
Now, we have my brother. I need to talk to him about this. My soul will not rest until I do so, but I don't want to dredge up the past. I don't want to risk our closeness now.
I don't know what to do, I'm scared. I can't live with the guilt anymore. I can't. It's eating me up inside.
I need help. I know I do, but I can't do it. I just can't

And you are the victim of insest by your brother more than anyone.
But you were only 8 so you were very much a victim ALSO.
So sad.
I wonder waht turned you brother into an abuser at such young age?...........He may have been abused too by someone else.
You were only 8 years old......It would be helpful to deal with this with a good therapist if you have access to one.
But you can start by forgiving yourself but not denying what happened to your poor sister was insest and abuse at its worse.
I would say seek a therapist.
I am so sorry for all your feeling, and going through. You have been a victim as well. My heart broke reading your story
many hugs
He still has the tendency to do the same to this day, but he has greatly tempered it.
Being married and having a family, I realize that he actually is a very good guy. He holds me in very high regard, and I, him. I don't know if he has repressed, dismissed or ignores what happened. I don't know. My hope, is that we can open this door someday and discuss our shared experiences. I'm not angry with him, I'm not. It is very rare that I ever speak to someone out of anger. Frustration, yes. I would like to discuss it out of love. Love for him, love for my sister, and love for myself.
About a year ago, I started to write out my feelings because I cannot physically talk about it. I had an abstract approach. I planned on focusing on her death. Not pressure him about responding, or talking about it. Just, plant the idea and allow him, at his own pace to think about it. Really think about it and hope he will, over time start to realize things and be able to talk about it eventually and naturally. Then, HE would be the one to talk to me about it. I am a very patient person, and I expect the process to last five to ten years.
During that period, I would get the counsel that I am now ready to seek. I have some referrals that I am following up with tomorrow.
This whole thing if frustrating because I consider myself to be a person of reasonable intelligence, and I feel like a child because, I don't know how to handle this situation overall. I know that keeping it to myself was not the best thing to do. I had to carry it.
I punish and I judge myself harder and harsher than anyone else. It does not manifest itself physically. I punish myself psychologically. I knew doing so was holding me back and not allowing me to reach my potential a person.
I'm done doing that. It's time for me to stop it. And I am, and I will.
Thanks again for all of your advice, insight and information.
I am sorry if I sounded judgmental about your brother - I wrote out of experience with someone who has never been diagnosed a sociopath but whose behavior is consistent with many of the characteristics in the literature. Luckily I did not expect anything of the encounter except that I could exorcise (I liked that word you used - very appropriate!) what was inside of me from what he had done to me. Just sharing it with him, knowing I had told the truth (my truth anyway) and would not be manipulated into seeing things his way was so empowering. He of course told me I had enjoyed being abused and that I was for the most part lying about everything I said. But I didn't need him to agree or to take responsibility when I spoke up - I just needed to know that I had finally spoken up. So .. ..
there is a good series of books you might find useful - what you said about judging yourself made me remember. The writer is Don Miguel Ruiz, and he wrote The Four Agreements, The Mastery of Love, and The Voice of Knowledge. Check these out sometime if you can - he exposes how we talk to ourselves and judge ourselves in a way that is very freeing.
hope tomorrow goes well for you on the referrals. :-)
I appreciate everything you said. In fact, joining this group has been one of the best things as I ever done because now, I can think about these things, draw from the experience of others and finally work it out.
I am very sorry about the abuse you endured. It's sad that people cannot, will not accept responsibility for what they have done to others. It's sick. Especially when they deflect it back to you. You don't deserve that. Nobody does.
I appreciate the book recommendations, I will seek them out. And I will keep you updated on my progress tomorrow.
Thanks again.
You and your sister were victims. You were 7 for god sake!
Your brother on the other side is/was either a sociopath or abused himself and passed down the abuse to you two.
In any case that he treated your sister like she did not exist. How convenient of him. And I would be very scared of his treatment of his children now.
He is a poor excuse for a human being and once I got very clear on the abnormality of the situation how you are not at fault nor your sister.
I would confront him. Knowing his reaction would be just as vile as his actions not only as a child but by erasing your sister out of his life after what he did to her.
I would not expect anything kind, or reasonable to come out of him.
And I would be very worried for his children.
What a piece of shit.Your brother.....you were his victim too.
2nd, me personally - I'm not triggered by the specifics you shared - that said - what matters today is this: you're choosing to share your story with one other person, in this forum, it's many folks actually. Sharing is the natural selection to being a survivor of a horrific event.
In time - may your heart, mind, soul find the peace and love and happiness we all as humans deserve.
