A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, usually done by a gynecologist. Hysterectomy may be total (removing the body and cervix of the uterus) or partial (also called supra-cervical). Although there are conservative alternatives, hysterectomy is performed for uterine fibroids, pelvic pain, pelvic relaxation, heavy or abnormal menstrual bleeding, and cancer.

Many fail to understand or acknowledge/admit the severe negative consequences of hysterectomy (with or without ovary removal) on a couple's sex life as well as the family unit. The removal of the prostate in men has similar consequences. I recall a man posting on a forum that his sexual function is 1% of what it was before his prostatectomy.

Its been just over a year since I had a TAH.. before surgery I had fallen in love with a man and he was to fly to my home for the holidays.I was 8 weeks post op..My expectations of myself was upsetting,I bled,dry and in my head I was trying to work up them sexual feelings..no dice..before my surgery I have always been a highly;y sexual woman not promiscuous,, just that when I got hot I was hot and the guy was all over me...gee..I went from that to nothing,zip.nada.Ive read somewhere to masturbate to keep the sexual desires a flame but even still if my vagina is shortened I would still have pain again if i were to have intercourse..of course the relationship ended not because of this but there were other issues ..if it wouldve been the right time in life(fate) then I believe this guy wouldve stood by me and wouldnt have cared about the sex just companionship.

Anyway what Im saying is my sex drive is gone,Ive no desire for it,even looking at a good looking man dont flush my face as it was one time ago. maybe one day I will be blessed to find a man thats considerate and understanding with whom I can enjoy companionship..as for now my children are my focus,as a single mom Ive been lonely for a long time.

sandyshores - I'm sorry for your losses! I know exactly what you mean about the loss of feelings of romance, sensuality and sexuality. I recall reading a book with a steamy sex scene a couple months post-op and had NO feelings whatsoever. That's when I realized the horrible reality of it all. Thankfully, I've been married forever and my husband has stood by me. But I still mourn the loss of our normal man/woman relationship.

Allow yourself to mourn and get help if it becomes too overwhelming.

f4chg thank you for validating Sandy and thank both of you for your honest post. I know others appreciate the topic and frank discussion. No reason not to hope, every day you wake up, that things will be different. Being a real hands on mom deserves big kudos and takes strength of spirit...you'll do fine and if you want a partner, one will come along when you're ready. Its kismet.
